Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati???
I've never even heard of that hospital, but as a nurse, I can tell you that just about 100% of all hospitals are short on nursing staff, and thanks to state and federal regulations and malpractice insurance, we all seem to spend more time on paperwork and less time with patients than we'd like. I wi**** were different, but it doesn't look like it will change any time soon. The suggestions to take a support person with you are excellent, please do so if at all possible, and best of luck.
Hi,
I had my surgery on 10/11/04 with Dr. C at Deaconess. My husband was with me with the exception of the first night. Yes, Deaconess is short staffed but I think this is the rule at this point in time. I never had any alarms go off nor anyone rude. They all had a job to do and systematically did it-patience. However, if there was a situation which was a concern, THEY were there.
The only exception was the one nurse the first night. I felt sick to my stomach and REPEATEDLY told her I needed something. I know she was in my room at least 4 times and I told her this each and every time. I kept dozing off due to the pain meds but so uncomfortable when awake. I finally told her that she could either GET me something, contact Dr. C. for an order or get me something to vomit in because I could no longer keep going on like that. That must have been the trick because within 10 minutes she gave me something and I was fine.
I know at our local hospitals they are short staffed as well and the doctors realize this. When it comes to having to wait a bit for assistance vs. the competience of my surgeon, I'll go where the surgeon goes and deal with the rest!
