Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati???
Hi Nancy,
I had surgery there on 11/12/04, Dr C did the surgery. I had surgery on friday, released on Sunday and went up stars to the hotel and stayed till tuesday. I had a friend stay with me for the duration. I had no problems, the nurses were all very nice. My only suggestion is make sure you have a support person there with you. This way they can make sure you have everything you need and they actually keep you company. I was really happy with my care and happy that I chose deaconess and Dr C. Make sure you ask for your popsicles : ) I have not had any problems since my surgery. No nausea, no nothing. I feel fantastic....
I wish you all the luck and a speedy recovery.
Jackie
Nancy,
Good morning. I had surgery at Deaconess Hospital in July. Not WLS, but surgery, with Dr. C. Just like any hospital in Cincinnati, there is a slight shortage in nurses, but I still wouldn't say I had bad care. Dr. C is totally aware of the situation, and is doing his best to make improvements of the situation. Good luck with your upcoming surgery. You have picked the best surgeon in the tri-state area.

i had surgery just 2 weeks ago at Deaconess. Dr. Curry and his staff are very caring and attentive. However the nursing staff appears to be short-handed. I really should clarify that there was only 1 nurse that I truly felt was ditzy, you'd say something to her and she said ok, be right back with that, and not come back for an hour, and then w/o what she went for. My 18.5 yr old son went down and stayed with me, he also felt there was something missing in the nursing area. (maybe cause this IS his MOM), MY IV alarm would go off 45 minutes of each hour, which I would use my nurse call light and then wait and wait. Maybe I picked a back week to be there.
At the same time I seen the faults of some of the nurses, there were just as many that busted their humps trying to keep things running smoothly.
Here is my feeling on the subject. I had mine done on july 9th and had a wonderful experience. I cant imagine anyone saying bad things. I had a great experience but I also had an easy time of it. The ones that have problems of course arent happy. I think Dr. Curry is the sweetest Dr. and very much a perfectionist. My son is having his done on Jan.11 so you know I think they are great. All I can say is that he cares so much . I hope you have an easy time,Cindy
Hi Cindy...Not trying to cause any trouble here but I had my surgery on 11-16-04 and I will be the first to admit that the nursing care at the Deaconess was terrible! You definitely need someone to stay with you and to see that you get the things that you need. I can't tell you how many times that I rang for the nurse and got no response. I was having problems breathing and if my niece hadn't been there to go and get the nurses, I am sure that I would have had a full blown ashtma attack. The folks who did blood work and other tests were wonderful, but they need to increase the nurses there! Thank God for my niece and sister who stayed with me constantly. I was more then ready to get out of there. The nursing care is by no means a reflection of the care given by Dr Curry, but hopefully he can eradicate the problem of the nursing care.
Dr Curry is an excellent doctor, but Deaconess has alot to be desired, but it is still the best laid out for bariatrics. They do have an extreem nurse shortage (From Aug-Nov that I know of).
If you would like to hear or know my personal experience, my brother in law, wife, and myself had surgery there from Aug 16 to Sept 28 of this year, but after typing it up, I thought it best to share on an individual basis.

I had surgery with Dr. C. for an internal hernia in July and I couldn't of got a better Dr. than Dr C. His car and his staff are the best.
The nursing staff at Deaconess has nothing to do with Dr C. I can definitely say that when my IV alarms went off and I called for a nurse, it took over an hour and then my daughter went and got a nurse to change my IV. Other than the nurses being short handed, I can't say anything negative about the care that I got from Dr. C.
I do agree that if you are having surgery that it would be a good idea to have someone stay with you during your stay in the hospital.
Again, I stress that by no means should this reflect on Dr. C. He is truely a remarkable and caring Dr. Now a days with everybody want to perform Bariatric Surgery you do have to screen before choosing the right Dr.
Even though he did not perform my WLS he did listen to the pain that I was having and went in for exploratory surgery and found that I had an internal hernia which are not detected thru any kind of test.
I hope that your surgery goes fine and you have a speedy recovery and a wonderful journey.

Nancy is probably a bit confused, she is not a patient of mine but I believe Dr. Smith's. We have been collaborating a lot lately and scrub together quite frequently.
The problems we have had with nursing at Deaconess are indeed related to really a city-wide nursing shortage. The care patients get is good but the nurses are stretched too thin.
On the positive side, unlike many places myself and my staff are on the premises all day and can take much better care of our patients because of that.
If you look at the hospital reviews you will find negatives for almost every place in the state.

Thanks Doc, I am a patient of Dr. Smith's and of course his office is next to St. Elizabeth's so I am assuming he will not be on the premises other than when doing surgery or making his rounds. Do I have anything to worry about and is there really anything I can do to make the situation better? Nancy M
