Alcohol?

Please don't yell at me, I just have an honest question here.... I'm considering WLS and am curious about alcohol consumption after surgery. I know that I wouldn't be able to have any for a long time, but after I'm used to things and my body is feeling back to norm, could I have a few beers at the bar on Friday nights? This is a very permanent surgery and the thought of giving up that social interation really bugs me. It's not that I want to binge drink, but I don't want to sit at a bar and sip on water for the rest of my life, either..... Any thoughts?

Melanie, I'm still pre-op, but I've heard this discussed before and I have a friend who is 3 years post-op. I've heard most doctors recommend that you stay completely away from alcohol for a minimum of 6 months, then I've read where people have gone on a cruise and had a drink just 6 weeks post-op and didn't have any ill effects. It will all be based on how you and your body can handle the alcohol. You may personally be able to handle alcohol post-op, or your new pouch may give you fits. You'll never know until you try. Heck, you may not even like the taste of it after surgery. Good luck to you! Lani

I certainly won't yell at you! I am two years out and had my first alcoholic beverage about 1 month out - Kaulua and cream - kind of wimpy, but caused no problems. Now I have an occasional glass of wine or an adult beverage. Just be careful - the alcohol gets into your bloodstream very fast. Not only am I a "cheap date" because I can't eat much, I'm a "cheap drunk", too! One drink and I am tipsy. I don't think a beer or two will cause problems down the road. Sue

Beer may be difficult because it is carbonated and very filling. I have had the occasional glass of wine since about 6 months postop with no ill effects. Two glasses makes me quite loopy. I can drink some beer but not even a full can or bottle without getting extremely full. I'm not sure the nutritional value of the beer is worth it...

Melanie, I enjoy the occassional indulgence myself. I first had a few ****atils around 6 mos post op. Liquor hit me hard and there isn't much to mix with, that I could tolerate. I eventually was able to drink beer again. I do feel the effects much differently. I know that you have to watch because alcohol turns to sugar and you must be careful about liver damage. All in all make sure you know yourself, take it easy and be safe with consumption. By the way, I am a WLS Coach. If you are interested in reading some things I have written about WLS check out my website - www.decision-of-a-lifetime.com Good Luck and remember, Being prepared mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually before surgery = fast recovery!!
