Well make a long story short if I can. My Mom and I had surgery the same week, she had a knee replacment & I had my WLS . She is doing really good, it took time. Last Sept. 2003 she lost her Basset Hound that she had for about 16 years, The dog had to be put down because it became very sick. Of all time for it to happening was the same date that my father past away back in 2000. That dog was her only company at home. Well around the first of Oct. I got here a Hound dog from a friend for free a 6 month old, She loves it but it is not house broken and scare of the out doors. My mom ccan not train it at this time so my Sister Maria took her in to work with the dog. The dog will go to the restroom in the house but not outside. My mom is in love with this little hound but it driving me crazy and I believe it is the same for Maria.. Any suggestion or advice, and she likes to wet on carpet so how can I stop that. I have cats due to i'm away all day at work and cats are easier to manage. Advice needed, this is new for me with a 6 month old pup. Thanks for ur time

I have a new puppy also...14 weeks. I take her out to the yard, and reward her with a treat when she "does her business". Works very well

Daniel, I hope you are doing well. When my dog was a puppy we had difficulty training until we talked with a professional. She then trained in about a week. Here's what we did. We purchased a kennel (cage type) and put it in the main area of the house. We kept her in the kennel and would take her outdoors at certain times of day and stay out with her until she went to the bathroom. Each time, we told her to "be a good girl" and then we would praise her for going outside. It only took a couple of weeks and then we got rid of the kennel. Now she goes out twice a day and all we have to do is tell her to go out and be a good girl. The idea is that the dog doesn't want to smell their own urine and will avoid soiling their kennel. Good luck!

Please - never, ever - "rub a dog's nose in it". They just don't understand that. Reward good behavior. Be sure the dog gets taken outside every couple of hours initially. Crating, as the previous poster stated, is also good. Especially if you crate the pup at night and take her out the first thing in the morning. (Crating is not cruel - it's like their den, or safe place.) Also, go to a pet store and get something to get rid of the urine smell in the carpet. The dog will go back to that spot(s) and urinate there again. We also had a "puppy corral" for our dogs when they were young and inside. I put down some heavy clear vinyl (got it at a fabric store), then put the corral or "puppy pen" on that. Makes accidents easy to clean up and gives them a little more room to move around. We have a 120 lb Rottweiler and a 5 lb Yorkie. The Yorkie is about 4 years old and sometimes still has a little problem getting outside in time, but the Rottie has not had any accidents in the house since he was house trained. I am not sure why this pup is afraid of being outside. Sounds like she needs a lot of reassurance and some play outside to get her comfortable. Hope it works out! Sue

Piggybacking on Linda's reply, after your dog has "done her business" outside, make sure that before you put her back into the kennel that you play with her. She will begin to associate using the bathroom outside with getting to have a play session inside. If you do have to scold your puppy for misbehaving, make sure you do it WHILE she is doing the undesirable act or she will have no idea why she is in trouble. As a last resort, Hartz makes a repellent that you can spray around her favorite spots if you still have difficulty housebreaking her. Good luck!
