Lap Band?
Hi Bobbi Jo. I am also researching the Lap Band and the Lap Band forum is an awesome information site. The folks there are fantastic. I also am terrified of the RNY procedure. The thought of my insides being re-routed is not something that I would want done. I have been stalking on these site for months and am finally ready to make my next move. The majority of my time is spent on the Lap Band Forum as well as the State of Ohio forum. There is so much information availiable to you it will be mind boggling at first. But, persevere. Most folks go by "the only dumb question is the one not asked". I wish you peace and luck on your journey.

Bobbi Jo,
I am becoming a lap band evangelist. I used to be anti-band because the initial weight loss data in the US was disappointing, which was contrary to all studies in Europe and Australia. We thought it was because of something different in our lifestyles or diet.
A multitude of studies have been released this year, however, which show that those initial ones were flawed, and the weight loss results are exactly the same here.
Studies have shown that the weight loss at 5 years is the same with the band and bypass, and the band has much less risk.
If you are a good candidate for a band, which, in my opinion is a BMI of 35-50, it's a no-brainer AS LONG AS you are satisfied with slower weight loss afterwards.
Band patients lose 5-15 lbs a month, bypass patients 15-30 per month. However with the band the weight loss continues for years so in the end it's often a wash.

BJ,
I am scheduled Oct 26th for Dr C's lap band. I've done my research and both this board and the lap band forum are great reference points on what to expect. Since Wilmington is not 'that far' from downtown Cinci Dr C. should be the first surgeon you see given your insurance covers him. Stop smoking now or at least start cutting back now because you WILL have to stop several weeks prior to surgery. Good Luck with your decision.

Hi Bobbi Jo!
I am getting lap-banded on 12/2 by Dr. Needleman at OSU. I'm very excited and have done tons of research before making my decision. I go to the lap band message board every day and have learned so much from both the pre- and post-bandsters. You can go back as far as you have time for and read all the posts. They cover every topic imaginable! You get great advice and hear stories from the newly banded to folks who have had their band for over a year. There is even a soon-to-be-banded woman who is trying to quit smoking, so I know you will get lots of support if you need it!
Good luck on your quest!
Pam
