Pureed diet........
Good morning all! Hope everyone has a super weekend. I am starting on the pureed diet today and could really use some suggestions as to what is good to puree and any ideas on the best way to puree food. I've been on full liquids for 11 days, since surgery. Any thoughts on this would sure be appreciated. Also, how did you all manage to get all of your fluids in every day? Any tips? Thanks!!! Jan
This was the best. My sister in law made a big pot of fresh veggie soup. Then she pureed it and poured it in ice cubes trays. Froze them and when I thawed one or two cubes it was not soupy and I had it over mashed potatoes. It was great. It was also my lifesaver. I got the beef and also wonderful veggies. Good luck,Cindy
Hi Jan, I had a deffinite progression of food items I had to follow. I started
out with soft stuff like cottage cheese, well cooked mashed vegetables and yogurt that didn't really need to be pureed. Then each week I got a new item to add that I started out trying pureed first. I used a hand held blender or a food processor. If you add some broth, low-cal salad dressing or skim milk to many items, you can puree them successfully. You could also add yogurt. I started with fish and seafood, moved on to chicken and turkey, and this week I can have beef and pork ( and other meats like venison). I got to add salad veggies during this time, but they are mostly water and I didn't have to puree them, I just chewed them real thoroughly. I had a real problem with chicken, so I cooked it like soup in the pressure cooker and chopped it up real fine and made sure it was real
moist with the broth and it tasted great after being on liquids for so long.
Did your surgeon or dietician give you a list of things you can have? It is best to follow their instructions. Eat real slow.
I have not had any trouble getting my fluids in. Some of them deffinitely went down smoother than others. Water was the hardest for me. I took too big of gulps and it hurt my throat going down. I found that other sugar-free drinks like crystal lite went down better and you can add protein powder to them if you need to get your protein level up. I have a 2 quart jug that I keep filled with whatever liquid I want in the refrigerator. I just take a glass full and sip on it evry few minutes and then re-fill the glass. When the jug in the frig is empty, I have taken in the amount of fluids my surgeon requires. I carry a bottle of water with me if I am going to be away from home. The timing of meals and knowing when to stop drinking and start up again afterwards can get a little hectic, but things settle into a routine pretty quickly. We are really busy the first few weeks with food, liquids, meds, exercise, appointments, rest, etc.! Good luck! Alice
