How many of you are doing today what you thought you would be doing when you either graduated high school or college? I know that when I graduated high school I thought I would go into broadcasting and started college in communications and then switched to broadcasting at Otterbein. Then I switched to business and then to Accounting. It just seems so funny because Accounting is so far away from broadcasting, but I still do all the interviews, speeches and TV appearances for the office so I guess I get some broadcasting in. Cheryl

When I started college I started with Accounting and I've stuck with it throughout my career. Quite a long time ago, though, I moved into management and don't really do much hands-on accounting anymore. Funny thing -- a few years back, when my personal life was in crisis, I thought I'd reduce my stress and took a job in a non-management staff accounting position and found that I really didn't like accounting much anymore -- it actually increased my stress! I stuck with it a little more than a year and then changed jobs and moved back into management. I love my job now. As much as I disliked the staff accounting job, it renewed my enthusiasm for being in management and I was glad I also had the opportunity to be reminded of what it feels like to be just a regular worker bee. It turned out to be a valuable experience for me in a much different way than I expected!

My very first instructor when I started nursing school had worked with cardiac patients for about 10 years. I thought, "How boring!" I planned to work in pediatrics or the nursery. However, after I did my peds rotation, I changed my mind. I wound up working with post op cardiac surgery patients for over 15 years! Now here I am, working for an insurance company, and I love my job. (I learn something new everyday, but I miss the patient contact.) I always pictured myself working in a hospital, but I got tired of working holidays, weekends, night shifts, being on-call,etc. So I got out and found myself something that I love and work Monday through Friday with no weekends, holidays or on-call! Totally different than when I started out 25 years ago! Sue

When I started college I wanted to go into Education. When my scholarship money ran out I had to quit college for a while, I had not finished my degree at that time. Worked doing catering, owned my own cleaning company at 19 years old and worked as a professional singer for a time. After I married my husband I went back and studied design. I really love design. We bought a home, had our first child, etc. and I never worked in my chosen profession. After I moved to Ohio I got involved doing volunteer work with high-risk teens. I wsa meeting with groups of about 15 kids talking about abstinence from risky behaviors (drugs, crime, promiscuity) It was such a great experience for me. Unfortunately after having my third child it became increasingly difficult to find childcare (we met during a different class period each week) and I had to step back from it. I have now found myself being a stay-at-home mom and volunteering at the school PTO and my church. I am very happy doing this, but if you had asked me 10 years ago what I would be doing it sure wouldn't have been this. This is the best job I have had so far. There are new rewards every day! I guess you could say my professional skills are well rounded LOL! Thanks for the neat question. Hugs, Jaimee
