Type I diabetics

I am a 30+ year Type I diabetic. I've been on a pump for over 5 years now. I'm awaiting approval from insurance as my PCP, surgeon, and endocrinologist all say I'm a good candidate for this surgery. My question is two-fold; how do they regulate your insulin after surgery as my surgeon and endo are at 2 different hospitals and also, when your body goes into the ketosis phase, isn't that like ketoacidosis which puts diabetics at great risk? The doctors haven't quite explained this to me. Does anyone know of any Type I diabetics that have had this surgery?

Your dietican should be able to help you out with this. Are you currently seeing one? I know they say people who have type 1 most of them after losing 40-50 pounds no longer are diabetic! I had gestional diabetes with my pregnancy its an awful disease to control. I wish you all the best. Prehaps you can find some info on this in the WLS library? Karie -110

I dont know about type one diabetes. Your endo can help you as you lose the weight. I am type 2 and I lost 45 lbs and I am just getting off insulin slowly now. I am taking pills though. Type 1 is so different. You need to ask your Doc . We will always be diabetics, just controlled but type 1 people are skinny and still need insulin. Good luck, let us know,Cindy.
