Dr Curry... Question
Dr C,
I have been researching WLS since May. I have been to two seminars. One with Dr D Smith in Edgewood, Ky. And the other with Dr R Bolar in Lexington Ky. Both seminars on the subject of Open/Lap Rny.
I am very interested in Lap band surgery. I have met and talked to several people having great success from this procedure.
What is required to be a good canidate of Lap band surgery? And why are the doctor*s in my area Not more supportive? Everyone wants to talk me into RNY.
I met a woman that has lost 130lbs from Lap band. She flew to NY to have her sugery by Dr Ren. And another woman in Phoenix went to Mexico. Another when overseas. They are all very pleased with their surgery of choice. I work with a woman that went to California.
Are you having a seminar on this topic soon?
Thanks,
Tasha
Tasha,
The lap band is a good operation for most patients. Those who don't do well with it are those with very high BMI's and people who eat a lot of sweets. It is the #1 bariatric procedure performed world wide.
The main disadvantage is that you lose weight much more slowly than with a Roux-en-Y, although in the long run the final results are very similar.
Surgeons who are critical of the lap band are either not familiar with the current literature on it, or don't know how to do it and are therefore biased against it.
At my seminar on September 9th I will discuss this topic in detail.
