Elivated Liver Enzymes
I just had blood work run and have elivated liver enzymes - I am 8 weeks post op. Mt PATs were normal. I have called my WLS group and am waiting for a reply, but has anyone else had this happen? There only 2 meds that we are questioning at this time Actigal and Glucophage. Just wondering - Thanks Deb
I just did some research on this a couple of nights ago. My DH has had elevated liver enzymes for about 2 years now and has had almost every test (with the exception of a biopsy) done. On Tuesday, it was decided that he had NASH.
Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis or Fatty Liver is a condition in which fat accumulates within the liver cells (hepatocytes) without causing any specific symptoms.
According to this site: http://www.lef.org/protocols/prtcl-125a.shtml
"Interestingly, among patients with fatty liver related to obesity, it has been observed that rapid weight loss caused by dieting and intestinal bypass surgery actually increased the risk for developing steatohepatitis."
I mentioned this to DH's liver specialist on Tuesday and he said that he has seen patients with elevated liver enzymes who were bariatric patients. He told me that it's usually due to malabsorption.
I'm not saying this is what you have, but I thought I would pass on the one option I knew about. I looked on WebMd and it looks like the Glucophage could do something to the liver, but I didn't see anything about the Actigall.
Good Luck!
Hi Debby, I am preop and have high liver enzymes mine is 160. I knew 20 yrs. ago mine was high but nothing else was said about it so I assumed it was okay, however my pcp did blood twice and they are still elevated. I took more blood tests yesterday and an ultrasound, I won't know until next week the results. I just hope I can still have the surgery with this. I don't have a gallbladder it was taken out 26 yrs. ago. I'm sorry I can't help more with this, let me know what happens and good luck to you. Connie
