Lap vs Open Roux-en-Y
I've been approved through my insurance company and I've contacted Dr. Adolph at Barix Clinics. I think that I would like to have the Roux-en-Y done laprascopically, but Dr. Adolph only does it open. Does anyone know of a doctor at Barix the does it lap? Is there a big enought difference between lap and open that I should worry about it? Opinions please !!
Thanks,
Eric C.
Eric, first of all you need to make sure you would even be a laparoscopic candidate before you ponder the question. For most surgeons, your BMI would have to be less than 58-60 to get it done lap.
In my opinion (granted, I'm a laparoscopic surgeon) the lap procedure is far superior in terms of recovery after surgery. There is no difference in weight loss in the end, though.
Hope this helps,

Hi Eric,
I had a consultation with Dr Barbara at the barix clinic. I also wanted the lap, but he explained to me my BMI is 49, however it depends on how you carry your wait. If there is a lot of fat around the liver then it makes it hard to move around it to do the proceedure. Dr Barbara even showed me actual pictures of the differences in livers when he explained why I would not be a cndidate for it. You can call the Barix number and set up a consultation and speak directly with the surgeon. They go over the surgery in detail, good and bad, at that time they will be able to let you know if you are a candidate. The only thing about barix the consultation is $85.00 and I know with my insurance it did not pay for it. However the consultation was for near 2 hours, and with the information I got it was well worth the money. I hope this helps. Oh ya, I think all of the surgeons at Barix are able to do both lab and open. Not sure when you call the number they will be able to give you the information.
Hope this helps.
