My friend and I had a discussion in regards to whether or not they'd actually cancel a persons surgery due to smoking. Has anyone ever heard or had that happen?

I have heard of it, often. If theyfeel your lungs will not be strong enough for the surgery and the recovery, they will cancel it.

O.K. JOY NOW YOU KNOW THEY WILL CANCEL YOUR SURGERY IF YOU SMOKE,ESPECIALLY YOUR SURGEON,I AM ALSO HAVING MY PROCEDURE DONE AT UH WITH DR.JASPER AND HE AS WELL AS HOLLOWELL AND STELLATO,ARE STICKLERS WHEN IT COMES TO THINGS LIKE THAT,APPARENTLY THERE IS SOME KIND OF TEST THEY CAN DO TO SEE IF YOU SMOKED IN THE LAST 24HRS ON THE MORNING OF THE SURGERY. TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS EBONY

Most surgeons, depending on who you have, when you have your pro testing done they will do a urine test to check for cigerette smoke. Actually when you smoke it can be detected in your system for around two weeks. I know the surgeon I seen, insisted that I was smoke free for at least 8 weeks prior to surgery. I am currently still trying to quit. Lisa Johnson

The reason they want you to stop smoking is because when they put you under anestisa your oxygen levels drop even if you don't smoke so as a smoker they will drop even more and they have had complications bring people out of the anestisa when they are smokers and in some cases they have even lost patients...
