Hi everyone: I am moving along my journey to WLS. I am trying to decide on which WLS I want to have: bypass or lap. Please share your experience with me and let me know which you chose and are you happy with your decision. Would you make the same choice if you did it again? What did you like or dislike? Thank you all so much for the info and support! Have a great day!!

Hi Stacey, Just so you're clear, bypass or lap is not a proper comparison. A bypass can be done either open or lap. You might be talking about bypass vs. lap band. If you are here's the bottom line: the weight loss results are not quite as good with a lap band as they are with a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, but the risks are a little bit less. I think bypass is for all the surgery's do you mean lap or open? there is also the band and other types but they are all some type of bypass surgery. I had the Rne-y lap. the recovery time as for feeling better for me anyways was fast and short about 3 days out of the hospital I was going places. The only dis-comfort I had was the bloating from the gas which you just have to let work it's way out one way or the other. I am starting my 8th week and feel fine. the hardest part is finding foods that you can eat. I don't care if you put it in the blender then have to look at it you won't want to eat it. You can't make things look good after you put them in a blender. Remember all dr. are differant also on the recovery process. My Dr. ben-meir at St. V's is 10 full liquids 18 day pureed and then soft food til your six weeks then regular food slowly. (soft food being chicken tuna things like that) no red meat until 6 month has past. I have 2 other friends that have had the same thing with the same doctor and we all are doing fine with no trouble. If you can do a lap procure I recommend that. Your doctor will determine if he can do a lap on you. I have 5 little scars that are shrinking as I type one in my belly button so really only 4. I know others have had trouble and others have not each person is differant so you can't really go on what we went through My one friend had a lung falland had a reaction to the anit. they put in her iv but after that was fine but that didn't mean I would have that trouble. so your experience will be differant anyway from any other but I hope this helps. I also assume you mean Gastric Bypass or Lap Band..I had the Gastric Bypass performed at St Vincent Charity by Dr. Ben Meir 4-14-04. It was done Lap and my recovery was short and I've had no complications. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Ben Meir, although the process to get to surgery at St. Vincents can be frustrating...All in all I'd do it again especially with Dr. Ben Meir.. Good luck on your journey!
