Gained weight in hospital!

Hi, all! When I was in the hospital (Tues-Thurs night) I gained 13 pounds. I'm sure it was from all the saline solution, potassium and magnesium I took in by IV along with 64 oz of water each day because I don't eat much of anything. Will I lose this 13 pounds quickly or will it come off slowly? It was pretty depressing to say the least. Now that I can't take a diuretic I don't know how I am going to lose it - and I feel bloated. Any suggestions? PS I can't take diuretics because they could lower my potassium level again and that's what got me in the ER in the first place. Thanks for any and all advice, Donna

It will come off. Mine took about a week or so. Don't stress

Thanks to both of you! I feel better knowing that this extra weight will eventually be gone - I am feeling great now, getting at least 60 g of protein a day in and drinking 64 oz of water, plus other liquids. I have a blood test and check up with PCP tomorrow followed by a stress test at cardiologists office. Hope all is going well with you both. Donna

I held on to the IV Solutions like nobody's business. I came home with an extra 15 lbs. I felt like my skin was two sizes too small. I think it took 7-10 days for it to go away and real weight loss to begin. Most of the time they are giving you a dextrose solution. I think, since I had been sticking to a low carb diet before surgery, my body was more than happy to suck up those carbs in the solution. Tincture of time will take care of the extra fluids. Keep getting the water down as you can, and do remember to eat, so your body does not go into starvation mode. Take care, Sue

Donna, This is normal. They weighed me when I got to the hospital and I was 350 on the head. Shortly after surgery I was 367. 10 days later I'm 320. If you're in Ohio, just spend sometime outside. humid weather should itself be declared a diuretic! Good luck! Joseph Michaud

Thanks, Joseph. I live in humidity city - Cincinnati! I've been out walking and doing water aerobics in an outside pool so hopefully I'll be losing this water weight soon. From your numbers it sounds like you're doing great! Donna
