I have spoken with my insurance co. only to be told that my policy states " No treatment for weight loss." has anyone delt with this kind of statement and how did you get around it? I can not change insurance until Oct. would it be easier to get approved with anthem? thanks Kathy

HI Kathy, The problem is not UHC, it is the policy your employer has purchased. You can appeal the claim. But if you have another choice of insurance it would probably be better to try it first. Good luck

Kathy, If you have the funds to appeal it through and attorney, that may be your way to go. I have seen a few on here. Some have had luck with fighting an appeal like that while others haven't. Sometimes the wording can get your appeal over-turned. It might be worth a shot. I wish you the best of luck. Please keep us posted.... Hugs Lori

I have UHC..ended up paying for the surgery myself. Wish I didn't have to, but they just kept saying NO! Good luck to you though and I'd switch to anthem!

Kathy, I too have UHC, I have not officially been turned down. I am going through the program at OSU Hospital. I have followed all of their requirements, plus more. They will not submit to the insurance until I am approved by them for surgery. I made contact with UHC and was told yes, it is a covered expense. 3-weeks later I was told that was a mistake and UHC would not cover any weight loss procedure. I am going through with the hopes that they will cover it on the basis of medical necessity. I will update as I go. Here's hopping we both get approved through UHC. Nancy B.

Nancy - Did you see your benefits booklet? It will say in there if it's excluded. Mine says specifically: Weight reduction or control (unless there is a diagnosis of morbid obesity.) I also asked UHC for that portion of my benefits from them. Your post reminded me to call them to find out where it is. A word to everyone, document each and every contact with the insurance co. -Anne

No, I have not received a booklet yet. I did however find out when speaking with the insurance Co. Every time a request is made to your account it is documented and who you spoke with. I have the dates and names of who I spoke with. I have also confirmed with them if they show it on my file. I have been diagnosed as morbid obese. (what an ugly expression). Nancy
