Pre- Testing Question DR. C
Pre-op testing varies widely from surgeon to surgeon. Most docs will at a minimum do bloodwork, EKG, and medical clearance from an internist or cardiologist. Some do routine sleep testing, psych evals, upper GI's, endoscopy, among other things. Most programs, however, will only (with the exception of psych eval) do these latter tests if there is a suspicion for disease there. These tests are to make sure there are no problems that need to be addressed prior to a major operation that might increase your risk.
Good luck!
