I am just over 9 Mos. out from my BPD-DS and have lost 215 pounds. 556 to 341. I have a huge hernia on my stomach that is really embarassing to me, and Im real self conscious about it. Does anyone know when the earliest possible time I may be able to have this procedure done?? My surgeon says not til I reach goal, that is 2 long for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Randy, There is a wonderful Dr. that posts on this very board from Ohio. His name is Dr. Curry. He is from Cincinnati, Ohio, and would be able to give you an honest opinion. I have had 2 hernia repairs since my RNY surgery. But both of mine came after I reached goal, and after I had a TT. Just my luck huh? YOur doing beautifully on your weight loss. Congratulations. Is the hernia strangulated? I know with mine, they were, which required immediate attention. Sandy Pierce imnotfatanymore.com

Sandy, thanks for the kind comments! Randy, Your surgeon is absolutely right in my opinion. The recurrence rate of incisional hernias in 341 lb guys is probably 25%, which is way too high. You only have one "first chance" to fix that hernia, after that it becomes more difficult and more likely to come back each time. My recommendation is: wait, wait, and then wait some more. I know it's easy for me to say, but it's the best thing! Dr. C The Deaconess Surgical Weight Loss Center Cincinnati, Ohio

Hi, I'm a year out and have had an incisional hernia for 9 months. My surgeon said the same thing...wait until at goal since the recurrence rate would be high right now. It's gotten a lot bigger and personally, job wise, I don't anticipate being able to take off for surgery until next June...but I'm afraid it won't behave until then. What are the signs of problems...I know redness and if the area gets harder and isn't able to be pushed back in. Is it possible I will be problem free for another year?

Redness and a hard lump are definitely signs, but the bottom line is, if your hernia becomes incarcerated (meaning "stuck") you will know as you will have a sudden increase in pain. Dr. C The Deaconess Surgical Weight Loss Center Cincinnati, Ohio
