Hey everyone! So far, this site has been INVALUABLE to me. I've got the name of two surgeons. What do you think should be my first move? Consult with the surgeon, or gather medical records regarding my other diagnosis' from other docs? I want to move forward with this, but I know what to expect as far as seeing a dietician, psych, support group, etc beforehand. I've heard that if you can do a lot of the leg work yourself, it will go better. Whatcha think? Sandy F

Hi Sandy, I am pretty new to this stuff. I am actually going for my initial consult tomorrow. What I did, was made the apppointment (which I have wait for over a month for), then while I have been waiting I have been getting the necessary items that I need. Once I made the appointment, they sent me some forms to fill out and gave me directions on everything that I need to bring with me. That way I would be prepared. You may want to call to find out how long you have to wait for the inital consult. Hope that helps. Good luck. Heidi

Hello Sandy, I had Open RNY on 11/17/03. The very FIRST thing I would do is call your insurance and find out EXACTLY what they want to get you APPROVED. For me it was a letter of medical necessity, a 5 year weight history, BMI of 40 or more, 100 lb over ideal weight, psych. evaluation. Also get a list of doctors and hospitals that are in network. Next RESERACH, RESEARCH, REASEARCH!!!!!!!! Reasearch all the doctors, and hospitals. I had 5 different doctors to chose from. Learn BOTH the GOOD and BAD of each. Attent the free information sessions. You will learn a lot there. I went to 2 different ones. That's how I made my final choice of docs. If the information sessions are not free go somewhere else. Start going to SUPPORT MEETINGS. Even if you haven't chosen which doc you want they are a GREAT sourch of information. Most doctors want all of the paper work in order and approval before your first appointement. Most also want you to go to the info sessions. What ever questions you have either ask here or email me. I'll try to help in the best way I can. Good Luck, Robin W 11/17/03 218/168/118 half way there!!!!!!!!
