I'm home and I lived to talk about it...
Surgery was Friday the 13th and all went well with that. I did have some problems with labs and threwup my pain meds so stayed through until Monday afternoon.
Now that I'm home, I can't sleep!!! Is it because I was so "out" in the hospital? I'm feeling pretty good, pretty sore, but not taking any pain meds. I have discovered a gold mine.....Kroger's brand sugar free juice pops. The only thing that has made me want to eat.
That's another problem, I'm eating very little. About 2 ozs of soup with protein mixed in every 4 or 5 hours and a popsicle in between with a few sips of water. Also, a few sips of liquid protein. I just wonder if I'm doing ok, I feel ok, like I said, just pretty sore.
It's good to be on this side!! I'm looking forward to a fast recovery and a wonderful new life.
Julie
I was told that for the first few days home as long as your getting in liquid at this point you should be ok. Just keep trying with the protein. Maybe try to 'eat something', protein mix, every 2.5 hrs.
Take those pain meds if you need to. Don't let the pain get to bad before you start to take the meds. You may even want to just take some at night to see if it helps you to sleep.
Good Luck,

Hi, Julie!
I had surgery with Dr. Gersin 10/02. Congratulations! Did you have to go to the diet classes? If you did, get out the information and read over it again. I had a couple of sample menus and I used those as my guides. I honestly could not get in all the food I was supposed to, but I tried. At this point, your job is to eat and heal! You should be eating 3-4 small (pureed) meals and small amounts in between. Things that went down well - instant oatmeal made with lactose free milk, Choice DM, pureed turkey or chicken, cottage cheese, yogurt (low sugar), mashed potatoes, baby juice, V-8, etc. Don't worry so much about protein versus carbs at this point, but follow what the dietician recommended. I really felt that all I did was eat (despite not being very hungry!) the first 2-3 weeks. Also, go ahead and take the pain med, especially before bed, at least for the first 2-3 nights. And since it is going to warm up - get out and get some fresh air and walk!
All the best!
Sue
