OK...here is my problem.. I am 5'3". and I way 230. I had gone to a clinic in Ohio for my consultation. I was told by the doctor that I qualify for the surgery and that he wanted me to consider it. I seriously considered it. I then went to my family doctor to get my files and they gave me a hard time. They didn't give me the full file. They just gave me the info that I was put on meridia. They told me at the doctor's office that it's not necessary to have the surgery just cut my meals in half. That's what they always told me. They never put me on a "special diet" or tried to help me in any way. When the insurance company asked for more information and records I couldn't produce them What am i supposed to do. I have no energy. My husband loves how I look and who I am but I don't want to die of a heart attack or acquire diabetes. What does everyone suggest I do?

I suggest that you reserch the statistics of morbid obesity problems and deaths to statistics of complications and deaths from surgery. COpy and paste it to note pad and take it to your Dr and let him know you realize how this will be. This is your life and if you belive surgery is the way to go for you then your PCP should not hold you back. Doctors seem to think they can make better choices for you, but if you let him know you are educated on the surgery and risks I belive your chances wil be much better of getting him on your side.

christie.....i am the same height as u...tho i weighed 268 lbs when i had my surgery. today i have lost 108 lbs. i feel so much better and believe i will live a much longer and happier life cuz i had the surgery. i knew if i didnt that i was going to die or have a stroke right in front of this computer. and i wanted a better quality of life. but just because i knew that didnt make it much easier to have the surgery. i had 3 different surgery dates before i finally did it. i was scared. i believe we all are. but its a choice we must make. how u do it is up to you. i knew i had tried every diet on the market and some i made up myself and sure i lost weight...but i ALWAYS gained back what i lost plus more. i knew this was my last chance at a healthier way to live a longer happier life. and i

Christie~ I argree with Kathy. Your medical records are YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS. By law they are yours. If you requested them, and they refuse to give them to you, there are a few things you can do: Demand them in person, Talk to you WLS physicain and tell him the problem your having, and see if he can request them for you, or call the local medical board. Also, I am 5'3" as well, though I suffer from PCOS, and thus cannot lose weight though my attempts have varied and been many. I now weigh 305. (If I had listened to my PCP when he initially suggested this surgery, it would have been three years ago, and I would have weighed only 276 pre-op. Stubborness, I guess.) Beaware, if your PCP put you on Meridia, you may have a slight problem getting approved for the surgery. (Due to the damage Meridia could have caused...) Any ways, good luck! My thoughts are with you! ~ Cyndi

Christie, I don't want to repeat what everyone says, but they are right. You can demand that they send your complete file to your surgeon or to your attorney. Another suggestion I would make is that if your PCP refuses to consider this a viable alternative, I'd find another PCP as soon as possible. Obesity kills. If cutting your meals in half would have worked, you would have done it years ago. I'm 5'4", had laproscopic RNY on 8/22/02 and am down 119#. I started at 265 and now weigh 145. It is the best thing I ever did in my life and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I'm off all pre-op meds and most importantly, I've gotten my life back. My partner loved me just the way I was also... but it's even better now! You control your destiny, not your doctors or the insurance companies. You need to fight... and remember that you are fighting for your life. Patty
