Getting Closer to WLS

Hi, I'm Signe from East Central Ohio.  I have had my first appointment with Dr. Maguire in Dayton and am going through all the pre-op testing.  No date has been set yet.  I was hoping to have a DS but my insurance will not pay for a DS, plus Dr. Maguire prefers not to do a DS on people over 60 and I am 63.

I now plan on having the Roux-en-Y.  I will have to stay in the Dayton area for at least 2 weeks after surgery because I live 2 1/2 hours away.  I have so many questions and concerns running through my head.  One thing Dr. Maguire mentioned is that they can put a ring of some sort after the stomach on the opening to the intestine.  He says it keeps the opening from stretching and allowing the food to leave the stomach too quickly.  He said it is new and there are no results of the side effects.  Do you know of anyone who has had this?  Part of me says I don't want any foreign objects in my body that can go wrong and another part of me says to take advantage of the opportunity.  What do you think?

Another thing on my mind is if I am being foolish to go all the way to Dayton when I could get this done in Columbus?  I am going to Dayton because of the things I've heard about Dr. Maguire but are there doctors in Columbus just as good as him?

Are there any good support groups on the east or north side of Columbus?  I have not heard of any in Zanesville or Newark, so Columbus would be the closest to me.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.  I know thousands and thousands have gone through this but for some reason I feel very alone in it.

I had mine with Dr Teel from the same office. You are not crazy to go that far to their office , it will be well worth it. I had heard of the device you are talking about but did not do it because there are no long term studies on it's effects. It could be the best or worst decision you will ever make. If you truely want to change your life and use the surgery the right way you will not need it anyway.
No longer about weight , it's all about living.

I live about 20 minutes west of Newark.

I had my surgery done by Mid Ohio Sugical Associates.  Dr. Miller was my surgeon.  Alot of people love Dr. Patricia Choban and also Dr. Price.
They are all GREAT!!!

They are out of Mount Carmel

My experience has been WONDERFUL

They offer 3 support groups per month!  They are all at Mount Carmel West.

Check them out.

Signe,
One question.... do you have lots of longaberger baskets? HA! Just to let you know, I had RNY 10 years ago with Dr. Choban in Columbus (Mid West Surgical Associates). She is very nice but I am now having problems 20 years out with vitamin deficiencies and ulcers. I wish I had it to do all over again...I would of done the lap band. Now I am looking into reversal and trying to find a good surgeon in Ohio. I live north of Dayton. Do you know if Dr. Maguire does reversals? Dr. Choban said she never has done a reversal. The ulcer issue is the main problem. Constant gnawing sensation and nausea. Following the diet isn't bad. I dump when I eat too much, sugar or high fats. Have to lay down and my heart races. You think twice before eating something wrong again.

Lisa, yes I have too many baskets.  I've run out of places to put them.   I actually like the pottery better than the backets now.  At least I use the pottery every day while the baskets just sit there and look at me.

I could not say for sure, but it seems to me that I have heard that Dr. Maguire does reversals.  Best to call his office and ask. He certainly is one of the most experienced weight loss surgeons in Ohio and the surrounding area.  20 years from now it is hard to tell if I will have any cares at all, LOL, since I am 63 now.  Did you ever have an ulcer problem before the RNY?  Are you wanting to have the lap band now or just putting everything back as it used to be?

I had my psyc evaluation today and since they allowed me to leave without committing me I think I did good.  Hard to tell though!

Hello!!!

I had my surgery with DR. Myers at Fresh Start @ Riverside Hospital in Columbus. I wanted to make sure I was comfortable with my surgeon and went to different progams in central ohio and nothing really felt comfortable to me.

I went to a fresh start seminar and Dr Myers was wonderful! I knew this was the man I wanted to do my surgery. The program is top in the area and I had my surgery 2 weeks ago this Tuesday and doing great!!!

You can send me a message so I can give you more info... as many others would agree he is a great surgeon!!

Two weeks out?  Please tell me while it is fresh in your mind what the last two weeks have been like!  Please be brutally truthful!

To be honest it was not a bad as I thought it was going to be. I thought I would be in severe pain and I would be hungry and grouchy...

There is pain but it is controlled ( I am a big baby so not a lot of pain tolerence) I was always asked in the hospital they made sure I was comfortable. Dr. Myers wanted to make sure we had our RX before we went home so I had them went I came home.

I thought I would feel different... Meaning my inside... Nothing... I am not hungry for now.. I know that will change.

I am still on liquids but it is fine. I move to pureed foods on the 27th.

It has been a great experience and I owe it all to the medical team at Ohio Health and Fresh Start. They prepared me for this and Dr. Myers is awesome!!!

Any other questions.. fire away.....

Best of Luck to you and praying for a smooth process.

I too went to Dr Myers and recommend him as well. I had a sleeve On March 10 and have had minimal discomfort. So far I have lost 43 pounds so am very happy with my results. He also has a monthly support group plus a bunch of his patients meet for lunch once a month on a weekend.
He always makes himself available to his patients, we are given his personal cell phone number and he expects us to use it if we need.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Oh, and his staff can't be more accommodating and kind.
