New on OH in Ohio
I just joined OH and looking for someone to walk with me as I begin this WL journey. I've had my appointment with my surgeon (in Akron, OH) and my appointment with my Dr. Dietician. I am officially beginning my 6-month supervised diet...
I've been fighting steady weight gain since 2001. I've spent many hours with all kinds of doctors to end up telling me I have a very slow metabolic rate (22% less than the average person). Now I am at the heaviest I've ever been. (5'4" @ 229) I am on synthroid, metformin, anti-depressants, and a few others. So, as a last resort, I've decided to go through with WLS. After seeing my Dr. Dietician, he finally gave me some type of confirmation that I was eating right but exercising too hard...something about cortisol hormones???? Anyway....I am eating the same as I have been, but cutting back on my exercising to a moderate pace for the next 6 months. We'll see what happens as I continue this process.
Thanx for listening!!! Hope to gain a few true WL friends.

Good luck and welcome to the board, Sammy! I am almost 2 years out from RNY, and I wouldn't trade anything for it giving me my life back! Good luck on your supervised diet. I am sure there are several people on the board that may be able to give you more support than I can, since I have just moved to the state. I just wanted to wish you lots of luck and keep us informed and posted on your progress.

Thanx for the Welcome! I appreciate it. Beleive it or not, I know where Mingo is. I lived in Dillonvale for 8 years. I worked at WLSC (now University) for 20 years. Anyway...after your surgery, how did you feel when you ate in front of others? Did you let your family know what your decision was? I am debating telling anyone around me. Thanx
I found that the more people I told, the better I felt about my decision to have wls. People would ask me questions that I would have to answer......that way I knew more and more about my choice. By the time I was ready to go in for surgery, half of my co-workers knew exactly what I could and could NOT eat, and they were willing to help me out by asking questions, and suggesting other food options. I have had a few former co-workers to research into having surgery, and one of my best friends had WLS in March of this year, after seeing how well I did with mine. As far as eating in front of others, it never bothered me. My former coworkers were more upset that they were eating in front of me, but then they started asking questions about healthy food choices, so they learned by my example.
My family stood behind me in having the surgery. They all questioned me on my choices, and what would I do if I had any complications, but I only had one answer. There is only ONE complication that I couldn't overcome, and that was death.....all else can be overcome, as long as I was willing to put forth the time and effort into saving MY LIFE!

WELCOME to the OH OH board. I'm am old timer here almost 6 years post op so here are some tipes. RESEARCH RESEARCH and then RESEARCH some more on ALL TYPES of WLS to find the right one for YOU. Look at HOW and WHY you eat and then you will find what is right for you. band, RNY, BPDS, Sleeve, or what ever else is out there. Remember they fix our tummy not our head.
GOOD LUCK,
Robin

My wife and I are starting our Weight Loss journey as well. We have just had or initial appointment and have decided on the sleeve. We feel that it is a good in-between from the Band to the RNY bypass. Our next step is the mandatory evaluations. We were both hoping for a speedy process but it looks like our insurance company may no cover the sleeve but we will wait and see. Anyway good luck on your journey.
