Intro and ? Regarding "Medically Supervised Weight Loss" Requirement
Hi All,
My name is Mary. I am currently trying to start the process for weight loss surgery (most likely the Realize band), and I am so glad I found these boards. I have considered weight loss surgery for over a year now, but just recently decided to pursue it seriously. I started focusing more on weight loss earlier in the year, and at my high weight, was about 125 lbs from my goal. I've lost 16 lbs of that this year.
I am in a bit of limbo, as my current insurance doesn't cover any weight loss surgery, but I will be able to pick up Medical Mutual (SuperMed Plus) as of Jan. 1. I found out that Med Mutual does require a 6 month supervised weight loss program before approving surgery, so I would like to start that now. I want to do Summa's medical weight loss program - it sounds like it might really be helpful and that is where I want to have the eventual surgery.
My question is what happens if I do the supervised program and lose enough weight by January to no longer meet the criteria for surgery? Will the insurance approve me based on my starting weight? I don't have any of the medical conditions that would qualify me, just the weight at this point. And I don't have that many more pounds to go before my BMI is less than 40.
Any thoughts or experience with this would be helpful! Thanks in advance!
