I'm on to transition foods and i eat even less then the puree, i feel like i'm sick almost every meal (luckly only thrown up once though) And i'm having a real hard time drinking enough. I'm really worried i'm failing and it's going to be like this for the rest of my life. I was just wondering if anyone else had these problems, if it's normal, if there is anything i can do, or if it should have been better by now. Also any tips on how you got all 6 glasses down.....

A lot of people have trouble during the first few weeks post-op.  Unfortunately, my surgeon put me back on solid food right after surgery (I had scarmbled eggs before I even left the hospital afer my open RNY), and I didn't have any trouble as long as I chewed well, so I really don't ahve any suggestions as far as eating.

As far as drinking, I had a LOT of trouble getting in the suggested amount of water, but I was able to drink more if it was something other than water (milk, warm (but not hot) tea or broth, etc.).  Some people have said drinking water was easier if it wasn't cold (but the ONLY way I can drink water is if it is very cold)....

Hang in there!  It *will* get better.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

All you can do is do your very best in getting all that liquid down ...By the way did your Dr. tell you that it can be anything liquid...of course the more water the better...Just dont freak out if you dont get the recomended amount....
And another thing i found ...it was easier if I used a straw when drinking...You dont have to deal with as much gas....
I am over a year out and still use a straw as much as I can
As far as the eating...first of all...RELAX ......
Chew as much as possible and eat small amounts in each mouthfull...and if you have to go back to soft foods and soups...and add whey protein powder...Try not to make eating an unejoyable thing....
I hope that helps...Good luck....and you are not a failure !!!!!

I agree with the other posters. I could not drink water until almost 7 months out. I drank lots of crystal light and minute maid light lemonade. i wasn't able to eat all the food i was suppose to  but, like everyone else said it does take time. just remember chew, chew ,chew and sip, sip ,sip.

I had a real hard time keeping lilquids down too.  Make sure you follow your doctors instructions.  Call your doctor if you have any questions.  Drink slowly with sips.  I drank protien drinks that was mixed with water (proti- diet).  You can do it and it will be so worth it.
Good luck!

Just skimmed through the responses and wanted to say it WILL get better... the first 6-8 weeks are "practice"... you can't expect to get it right on a daily basis... took me about 3 months before I finally got into a groove with getting everything in.

I think I barely ate for the first month.

Hang in there... congratz on your sugery :-)

i personally wouldnt recommend a straw you will actually get more air from sucking through a straw.... as for the liquids i am over a year out and still have issues unless i drink all day long, in the beginning for about 6 months water made me feel horrible when i drank it, it was explained to me that it is because of the surface tension in water (you know that bubble you get when you slowly fill a glass of water all the way to the tippy top, it acts differently than other liquids do).....

so for 6 months i avoided water unles it was in the form of ice, try sugar free popcicles.no sugar added 100% fruit juices watered down, milk has always been good to me, hot teas, and my favorite sugar free apple cider with sugar free caramel flavoring!

it is normal to eat less of the whole foods vs the puree because they arent brokern down as much i was lucky to get 2 bites in at the beginning for the first few months, i still only eat about 5 small bites of chicken and some veggies and i am full.

just be patient everything will get easier with time just keep doing what your doing, keep a food log see if certain kinds of food make you feel sick (i cant eat real eggs anymore) maybe you'll see a pattern?

Oh and pepcid ac chewable are a godsent! for gas and burping i used to take one in the morning and one in afternoon or before dinner
