Ants In My Pants

I'm new here, just in the information gathering process.  But, I have decided that I am having WLS, most likely a band. And I can't wait to have it done!

Here's my question;  how long will it take from my first appointment to the actual procedure?

Hi SWAT RN.

It seems to vary from practice to practice, and also depends on whether you are self-pay or have insurance coverage.  My doctor (and many I've seen here on OH) require a certain amount of pre-op visits, for such things as orientation, nutrition and psychologic evaluations, brief seminars on topics all WLS patients will need to know/do after surgery, etc.

My first appointment was in October of 2007 and my surgery day was April 14, 2008.  But my insurance denied the request for surgery the first time, so I had to appeal.  That took about 30 days, then it was another 6 weeks or so before I could be scheduled for surgery.  A lot will also depend on how busy your surgeon's practice is.

You may be one of the lucky ones who doesn't have to jump through a lot of hoops, but don't be discouraged if it takes 6 months or longer.  It's worth the wait and effort.

Best wishes,
Jan

My First Consult was in earley November and RNY surgery was 3/24/2009.  No real problems except insurance lost paperwork over the holidays which slowed the process down for about three weeks.  Good luck.

My WLS seminar was Oct. 13, 2006 and I had surgery Jan. 10, 2007. My surgeon and insurance required 3 visits with the dietitian. Good luck. Paula Chumbley

Went to the required class 4/4/08 had surgery 11/20/08. Insurance required a 6 month diet with nutritionist. Denied 1st time because the dr missed sending in one month of the nut visit but was approved the same day denied because the dr faxed the info to the insurance co. So a little over 7 months. Good luck the time will fly.

Hey there.
If  you don't mind me asking, what is your BMI? I'm wondering because I also was determined to have the lap band at one time until one of my friends advised me to research the DS. If you haven't looked into it, come over to the DS board and ask some questions and check out www.dsfacts.com and www.duodenalswitch.com as well. If you've already done a ton of research and have made your decision, ignore me and more power to ya!

My BMI is 35.  I've looked into all of the procedures and after speaking with my surgeon, the lap band is the best fit.

My first appointment with the doctor was in Jan. 2009 and my surgery is 4/29/09.  There were a few delays because the doctor changed positions and went to another hospital and then my husband had classes for 2 weeks so I couldn't do it then.,......but finally 4/29....Mine all went fairly fast compared to some I have read on here so I guess as the previous poster said it depends on your insurance and doctor........Good Luck...Donna
