OK I need to vent here a little, I am now 4 wks out and am wondering if I will ever be able to eat again. I have been advanced in my diet per my doc to most foods, still no salads or nuts or raw veggies or raw fruits yet, but he tells me I can have meats as tolrated and fish ect.. Well I have tried and OMG it goes down and then comes back up, I am living on rice crispy cereal and some soups and jello all soft things, I and hubby tried to eat out, didn't work out well, I seem to have to burp inbetween bites, am having modrate gas after eating, I am wondering if it is poss that I am swallowing air when I take bites???. I had a rough first 2 wks at home, I had lost 20 pds at my 1st 2 wks checkup, but I am so wanting to EAT something and have it stay down. I can on some days get a slice of low fat turkey lunchmeat down, I know I am not getting in enough protein and some days I can only eat 2-3 times in a day. with the weather being so cold and snowy I have not been able to get out much, he told me that in about another 4 wks I can start doing more as in exerciseing, I did walk 1 mile today at the gym, but I tire so easy yet, but he assures me my energy will get better in the coming months, so I am wondering how is my wt loss to go forward if I am not getting in enough or exerciseing enough yet? I am just wondering how long it is going to take till I start feeling "normal" again. will I ever be able to eat out again? and OMG I can't take another bite of cottage cheese or mashed pot again, he told me to take a "break" from them since I am get nausea from eating them so much the 1st couple of wks. I am to go back to work in 17 days and I am worried that I will struggle to get through the day with my energy so low. I am taking all the vit I was told to take, and can drink about 1/2 of a 20oz bottle od protein water on good days, So just worry that my weight loss will slow since I am not eating as much as I should or that what I can eat is not good enough. So plz tell me that this all will pass and I will feel normal again soon, thanks for letting me vent here a moment. any suggestions from people will be great.
Well I finally have my date it is January 7th 2009, So I will be starting off in the new year with a new me.

First I would call the doc it goes down and then comes back up, I am living on rice crispy cereal and some soups and jello all soft thingsYou MIGHT have a structure.
I'm over 5 years post op and have never had any trouble eating. I have and still do dump when I don't pay attention to what I'm eating.
Call your doc and make them listen.

I agree... call your surgeon.  As long as you are chewing everything very well, you should not be having problems with everything coming back up.  In the meantime, please try to find ways to get more protein in (e.g., can you add some unflavored protein powder to soup?) because lack of calories and protein will definitely contribute to your fatigue.

I'm sorry you're having a hard time still...  I know how you feel about the cottage cheese... I was so sick of it that I am just now eating it again after not having ANY for over a year because I ate so much of it (and scrambled eggs) immediately post-op!  It will get better, but I do think you should see your doc and make sure (s)he knows how little you are getting in each day.

Feel free to PM me if you need to vent!

I agree too, call your surgeon's office! I had a lot of pressure and not able to eat more than about 1/2 ounce about 3-4 weeks out, I got scoped and had a an ulcer. I have been on Nexium since but it helps! The first meats I would crockpot in low fat cream soups so they were super soft. Anytime I get an upset stomach, I make softer foods. I also swear I lived on fat free refried beans for a while!  They go down easy and I would get energy after I ate. You need to be able to ea something to be able to function going back to work!!!  Good luck!

Thank you all for the advice, I did speak with my dr. and he explained to me that my passage my feel tight for a while since I had so much done on the hernia before I got my rny that day. I was able to eat finally some hambuger helper last night, about 1/2 c of it I made sure I chewed well and ate slow(had to reheat it 1 time), he told me to make sure I am eating SLOW and allowing time in between bites, which I might not of been doing enough of,I go to see him again in mid march so if I am still having trouble I will have him look further into it, but from what i told the nut when i spoke to her it seemed like i was maybe not allowing enough time in between bites and not chewing well enough, I spoke to a friend who is 2 yrs out and she had the same problem and still does at times if she trys and eat to fast or to big of bites, so trial and error for now. I will post on my page what if anything will happen on my next visit. but once again thanks to all,I always find good tips on here it is a wonderful site.

we are all basically learning to eat again. I am 3 months out and things are getting better but I still cant eat much and I still struggle to get my protien and water in. I get full taking my daily supplements and the 2 required pills. I make a meal out of it :) We have had to learn to eat baby slow. Have you tried using baby spoons? That is what I used the first couple months and it really helps me to eat slower. Good luck

Yes I do use a baby spoon on most meals, I am doing better and things seem to stay down if I eat them very slow, yeah I have to usually reheat my meal but at least it is staying down, my main thing is I am not eating 6 times a day more like 3 a day and maybe a snack, I am just not hungery and tired of eating the same things over and over. I try new things about once a week. I get down every once in a while wanting so much to have a hambuger or so bread or a salad but I know I only have a about 6 more weeks till I can add more to my diet(next dr visit then). I go back to work in 9 days and I know that will help alot, I am so bored sitting around home here, I go to the gym about 3-4 days a wk to walk but still I need to get back to work, so can't wait for that. but jsut wanted to say I am doing better learning at times the hard way but hey this is all a new learning process so I am still doing that. I must say though eating slower does help I think that was my problem from the start too. Thanks for all the advice.

You might want to try refried beans with cheese, ricotta with spaghetti sauce (the meat ones would add protein), clam chowder (I would chew, chew, chew the clams and make a little potato pile on my plate), hot and sour soup, and the gold standard for all RNY folks---Wendy's chili.

At four weeks I would have erped big time on cereal, solid meat, and especially hamburger helper.  Pasta still sits like a rock at times.  Soft things were fine and 1/2 cup is adequate----remember, a meal is no longer the typical portion----6 small meals work better for some.

Does your surgeon "allow" protein shakes?

Walking is fine.  You can use TONS of weight walking so don't despair!

I m 3 years out and still cannot eat heavy foods like steak or pokchops...little bead, no pasta, chicken, little rice....never lunch meat...I still cannot do salads much but can do raw veggies.....when I eat out I often get soup...orsplit a meal....or take enough hoe for 1-2 more meals....but you will beable to eat out...it took me at least 6 months tostop feeling nausea. My sister had Dr Mikami....he did have to dialate a stricture on her twice...she was nt keping anything down and would vomit right away after eating...see if he will scope you.
