[OT] Swim & Stride for Diabetes
My son Austin is taking part in the Swim & Stride for Diabetes to raise money for Diabetes Youth Services. Austin was diagnosed with Diabetes when he was 4 with a blood sugar of 1296. Normal is 80 to 150. The doctor's said he wouldn't make it through the night, well he is 10 now :) He is trying to raise the money to go to diabetes camp. Last year he had to come home early and missed out on lots of activities because he had gotten really sick. This year he really wants to go back and be able to stay all week. He is now on an insulin pump that has his diabetes under much better control.
The Big Shot Resident Camp is (held each summer at Camp Libbey in Defiance, OH) is the only camp of its kind in Northwest Ohio to offer a week-long outdoor adventure for pre-teen and teenage children with diabetes. Campers with diabetes are welcome to share the week with friends or family members who may not have diabetes and who care about someone who does. The camp provides a valuable opportunity for all youths to experience each other's uniqueness.
Campers can enjoy the "Exertrail", swimming in the half Olympic-sized pool, horseback riding, making quality crafts, and hiking on more than 300 acres of forest and fields along the Maumee River. Educational sessions are built into the program, promoting independence away from home.
Big Shots Resident Camp helps children learn to manage their diabetes independently, while being supervised by Certified Diabetes Educators. Positive experiences like the DYS Camp help to give kids the confidence to attend other area recreational and sports camps. Nurses, dietitians and young adults who have diabetes will complement the camp counselors, nurses and recreation staff provided by Camp Libbey.
Even a $1 would help. Please make a donation by visiting his Firstgiving page: http://www.firstgiving.com/austinhathaway . Any donation will help pay for his summer camp. All donations are secure and sent directly to Diabetes Youth Services by Firstgiving, who will email you a printable record of your donation.
If you're wondering how much of your donation will be taken for "service fees" the answer is 2.5% for the credit card processing and 5% to the company (Firstgiving) that hosts the website and manages everything. I always ask this because some of those "non-profit" companies take a huge percentage of donations which is pretty crappy of them. 7.5% is a reasonable amount. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.
