depression
Can anyone out there tell me if they have had such a deep depresion it them so soon after surgery? I am 2wks out and I am in such a dark place inside right now, I can not eat maybe a bite or two a day thats all I am having a hard time getting around all that I or my body has gone through,I keep trying to tell myself how much better my health is getting, but that don't seem to matter at this point. Nothing smells or sounds good, I know I have to eat to heal but I just can't seem to manange it. I am weak and all I care to do is sit and cry. Please is there anyone else who has went through this phase and how long till i feel like livivng again.
Gosh Jan, I was just getting ready to drop you a line and see how you are feeling. I'm so sorry to hear about the depression. Maybe it's the anesthesia that's causing the depression. You know your body has gone through major changes and it will take a while getting used to. Try to force yourself to eat a little something and keep drinking. You don't want to end up back in the hospital. I'm depressed now, but after I had my band placed and showed some weight loss I had a bounce in my step and I was happy and felt good. Then it all came to a halt.
If you are still feeling like this after a couple of days, I'd call your doctor's office and see what they suggest.
Take care of yourself.

Peggy thank you for your thoughts, Yes I think I will contact my dr only because I think it is interfering with my daily life at this moment. I am drinking as not to end up in the hosp, but the food I try and eat just does not want to go down very well and that just adds to my stress. I know It is going to take some time for me to adjust to what my body is doing so I guess I need more patience maybe, but thank you it is always so glad to hear from you.

I remember that early out I felt weepy for a couple of days. It slowly went away and I felt better. If you feel real bad I would contact your doctor. It may just be temporary as your hormones are really going crazy right now. Take Care!!

I had a hard time with depression right after surgery, too. For me, much of it was related to the continuing pain and incision oozing I had for two months from the open RNY. Lots of women experience it. (Depression is a common side effect of ANY kind of surgery, by the way.) You are still very newly post-op and your body is trying to adjust to the MAJOR surgery you just went through. If you are unable to eat, please do your best to get some protein in via protein supplements (powders or the protein waters) because you really do need the nutrition to heal and physical stress contributes to emotional stress.
If your depression does not lift in another week or two, please see your PCP. As much as I did not want to, I needed to be on anti-depressants for a couple of months. It was short-term treatment (I think I took them for 3 or 4 months) but I really needed it to just function again.

Thanks so much for the advice, yes I am going to go tommorow and see about some different types of protein drinks, I just can not stomach the chalk gridy choc one right now. Someone mentioned to me one called ISO pure i belive it is a water drink with protein. Yes If this dark mood does not lift in another week or so I will seek out some antidepression meds, I had been on one yrs ago for some mild depression after a death in my family and they seemed to work well was on them for about 6 mos then went off and did fine till now. So once again thanks for the advice.

A lot of people (and I am one) cannot stand the weird aftertaste and coated-tongue feeling that sometimes comes with the Isopure protein water. The Cytomax protein water does not have either of these, but sometimes needs to be watered down because of the sweetness. You can also try samples of the Syntrax nectar protein (nothing chalky or whey-smelling about those) or even the Atkins advantage pre-made shakes (available at Walmart) which are also more palatable than many protein powders (but they are a little pricey since they are pre-mixed). You might also try the "Oh Yeah!" premixed shakes as they are also have a much better texture than protein powders,
Take care of yourself, and remember that you are not alone... a lot of people go through this post-op.
