I have med mutual  ohio ppo and was prescribed lovenox for 2 weeks after surgry my insurance doesnt cover it and it will cost me over 1000.00 to get a 14 day supply. they dont cover heparin or fragmin either. Has anyone ran into this problem and if so what is the alternative that your doc gave you. I was thinking maybe he could give me cumidin (spelling ??) and I could cru****  But not sure . Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest talking to your surgeon about it.  Also calling your insurance company and checking to see why it is not covered.  Sometimes the drug companies have a way to help pts get the prescriptions also.

Hope everything works out for you.

Try calling the insurance company AGAIN and ask to speak to a supervisor if necessary.  They HAVE to cover SOMETHING that is a fast-acting anticoagulent (coumadin takes a minimum of 36 hours to "kick in" and is therefore USELESS for several days after starting to take it... and pretty much useless for about a week because a single coumadin dose will not get you to a therapeutic range, so you ahve to take it for several days -- and wait the 36 hours for each dose to kick in -- before it is really protecting you from clotting).  I am usually not therapeutic for about 8 or 9 days after starting the coumadin, so it is NOT appropriate for a 2-week post-op regimen!

I understand them not wanting to cover the lovenox because ti is still pretty pricey, but I have no idea why they would not cover heparin injections because heparin is pretty cheap.
