Cross post from the RNY boards - reflections 10 month out

Posted this on the RNY boards but wanted to share with my Ohio mates!

Had to see my surgeon today for followup on my EGD and colonoscopy a while ago.  And to have him check my growing hernias.  I thought I was getting one more in the groin area, but the pain I was having may not be a hernia there - couldn't find anything so will just wait for other symptoms.  The umbilical hernia hasn't changed in size too much, but he suggested I consult with a plastic surgeon on combining that repair with a tummy tuck.  The ventral hernia is getting bigger and very noticiable  - he would like me to address that one sooner.  I don't look forward to any more surgery so I will wait a bit for that, and I would like to lose more weight!  On another note I was telling him how good I felt and mentioned some of the things that are so different in my life than what I was last year as I approached my RNY surgery date of  12/12/07!    So I thought I would jot them down again, because they are so unbelievable to me and I know alot of you out there have had similar or better reflections of the changes since surgery.  So here is a short list of those I can remember now!
-  I hiked to the top of Diamond Head in Hawaii - 257 steps!
-  I rode a bike down the Haleakeala volcano on Maui - 28 miles
-  Did two walks with my friend Martha for charity - Labor of Love and Obesity Awareness
-  Most days I do 2 flights of stairts (39 steps) twice a day at work
-  I can easily run up the steps at my home 2-3 times a day
-  I have been trying to walk to meetings at a nearby hospital several times a month (20 minute walk) instead of driving
-  I have gone from a 24-26 size clothes to 12-14 size clothes
-  I started running a little bit when I do my walks - it didn't feel too bad, but my rt. knee always has to start making a fuss ( I used to run when I was thin)
-  I have lost over 100 lbs ( 30, 1 year prior to surgery, gained 20 back, 8 during the 6 month preop, and 85 since day of surgery )
- and of couse my health, I no longer have high BP, cholesterol or diabetes!

For the future, I just signed up for ski lessons starting in January!  We are going to Colorado in March - I haven't skiied in 20 years so I am really not sure of what I am going to be able to do, but I want to try!

So there it is - I am overwhelmed with gratefulness for what this surgery has given back to me!  I read about how other lives had changed for the better and now have experienced  it for myself. It is wonderful - I am blessed!
