Dayton Folks... New Home Appraisal

Any one else get one of those lovely forms stating the value of your house either went WAY up or WAY down?

Mine went WAY up... crazy high... now normally I'd be excited, but knowing that with it my taxes will increase I'm pretty P/O.  Especially since it was a 20% jump.   Which if I calculated it right means 400 dollars more in taxes each year.    NO FREAKIN WAY!

I made an appt next friday to have them re-check it (what really ****** me off is the fact that the audit was done 2 years ago before this huge ecconimical crisis)

Anyone else come across this... make an appt yet?

The guy on the phone was surprised I was calling.. he said most of the folks that were calling (Mainly oakwood and kettering) were calling because the value of their house dropped dramatically.   I have a friend who lost 40k in value on his house.

I didn't get a form yet, but checked the treasurer's website and mine went up by $9k.  Don't even ask me to do the math on the percentage.  I am happy with this, as the house behind us went up for auction as the old people passed, and it sold for $65k, which is at least $50k lower than the normal values.  I was afraid that would hurt us.  So I am not going to ask for a do-over nosiree!

My mom's went up an INSANE amount (especially considering that it already went up an insane amount the LST time they did the appraisals).  She has her appt set, but has not been in yet.  She had her house on the market fro over a year, and got only one offer, which was 30K UNDER her asking price (and 10K under what she apiud for the house 6 years ago!), so she is taking a copy of that offer (from her real estate agent) and some of the area "comps"  with her to the appointment.

Mine went up about 6% (but I did some exterior improvements in the last 3 years), so I have no gripe (although I don't like paying ANY more taxes -- between the last property tax increase, the last school levy renewal and icnrease, and the huge increase in the human services levy amount, I am feeling VERY overtaxed -- and I might actually, for the 1st time in my life, vote NO on the school levy).

I'm assuming from what you told me about where you live that you are in teh Centerville school district.  I graduated from Centerville High School ( a long, long time ago... I think the High School building was only 5 years old!), and have lived in Centerville since 1989 (as a homeowner since 1998).  I think the Centerville schools have traditionally done an excellent job of controlling costs and spending taxpayer money wisely.  When the last school levy came up, they had honored their commitment not to ask for another increase for 7 years after the previous one, and I supported it wholeheartedly becasue it was for things they really needed like buyilding repairs and upgrades.  When I look at the information about how they want to spend the money from THIS tax increase, however, I personally see a lot of "pork"...
