Moving to Cincinnati

My husband and I are relocating to Cincinnati.  We don't have a move date, but expect to have a date soon.  He'll be working in Evendale, and we need help deciding where we should live.  We plan to rent, since we only anticipate being there two years.   Here's what I'd like to know:

Which areas would you recommend since he'll be working in Evendale?
What do you like about that area?
What do you dislike about that area?
How's the shopping/entertainment in that area?
How would you describe the overall feel/vibe of that area?

I'll take all the help I can get.

Thanks,
Alison

1.  I'm assuming it's GE.  West Chester is a quick 10 minute commute (the way I drive).  You can find a house for rent.  If you want something more urban, Springdale/Evendale/Blue Ash....all just over the hill.
2.  All of the above areas are very safe, close to shopping, and if you're looking for a surgeon to follow up/support group, Dr. Curry's practice is in Evendale.
3.  There's nothing to dislike, but I'm originally from Columbus so I'm prejudiced....
4.  Shopping is great---best in the city---10 minutes from Kenwood, 10 from Tri-county (malls).  Grocery, etc. a quick drive from anywhere in the area.  If you're looking for club-type entertainment or "culture" you would be 20-25 minutes from downtown.
5.  Pleasant, cordial....Cincinnati tends to the conservative.

Welcome to town!

I read your profile and see your from Chicago.  Cincy will be easy-----traffic is SOOOOOO much better!!!!

Thanks for the help, but I'm actually from Florida.  We just visit Chicago a few times a year.  I've lived my entire life within a 45 minute radius, so this will be quite different for me.  And yes, you guessed - GE here we come!

If you are going to be relocating near GE and have had WLS, be sure to check out our Fast Track Center.  It's an exercise/nutrition/support facility just for WLS patients and it's right across the street from GE at Reading/Glendale Milford Road.  Patients really love being able to work out there with a bunch of other WLS patients rather than dealing with all the muscleheads (no offense to the muscleheads) at the usual gyms.

YOU LUCKY GIRL!!  I love Cincy...If my husband said we could move there, I'd be loading the moving van now!!

We visit Cincy monthly---more during baseball season, and we always try to stay around the Kenwood/Blue Ash area ---great shopping and safe area, and closeby to all the fun spots--Xavier, Kings Island...Kenwood Towne Ctr. and many dining selections...

Best of Luck with the move...wave as u pass by my town...

Which areas would you recommend since he'll be working in Evendale? I work in Blue Ash which is "next door" to Evendale. I would suggest Evendale, Sharonville, West Chester, Blue Ash or Mason. They are good areas. If you have children I would suggest Blue Ash, mason or West Chester- better school districts!
What do you like about that area? They are all close to everything! Malls, Restaurants all major expressways so easy access to downtown
What do you dislike about that area? The one thing is if you are a late night individual they kind of roll up the sidewalks around 10 or 11. If you want late night fun you gotta go downtown which is only 20 minutes away. The other is I'm not as conservative as most are here in Cincinnati but I just keep my opinions to myself and my husband. LOL
How's the shopping/entertainment in that area? Shopping is great! Kenwood Mall, Tri-County Mall. Entertainment- We've got Kings Island, Cincy Zoo, Newport Aquarium, The Beach Waterpark- Not sure what entertainment you like but we have it I'm sure.
How would you describe the overall feel/vibe of that area? Its home to me. I'm from the Sharonville area. Born and raised here. Like I said in my previous answer. I'm not as conservative and really that's what this city caters to.

Happy to see your joining us in Cincy!!!

Born and raised West Sider here. What type of housing are you looking for. Newer housing - well you got your areas pretty much mentioned. You will find eventually there is an East West division. Springdale Wyoming area is nice as is Finneytown Most things are are 20 minutes away LOL
Which areas would you recommend since he'll be working in Evendale?  We have a lot of good schools plus a great Catholic school system.  Wyoming Fairfield area Sringdale Glendale also are good areas although slightly older
What do you like about that area? Everything is pretty much 20 - 25 min away

What do you dislike about that area? The best place to go for fun is in KY. Newport on the Levy

How's the shopping/entertainment in that area?Lots of sports and entertainment and Newport on the Levy. The KY side of the river is boooming

How would you describe the overall feel/vibe of that area? I love my west side

You're moving to Cincinnati??? OMG!! I just moved here 4 months ago for my job. I didn't meet you in Jacksonville, but the cruise girls couldn't stop talking about how pretty and cool you were. :-)

I bought my first week here in East Walnut Hills which is a neighborhood near the river with really cool huge old houses (the one I live in was turned into condos). The down side is the neighborhood rests right up against a not great neighborhood, but being from Chicago, I feel completely comfortable here. My condo is gorgeous and was way cheaper than Chicago.

Overall, I like Cincinnati. Shopping is great. Terri R was just here last weekend and she and I hit the outlet malls HARD (they are about 60 miles North). Restaurants are surprisingly good. People are super nice (but they drive like crap). Entertainment is not big city, but I have been to some cool bars and there's movies and stuff. We mostly have parties and dinners and entertain ourselves. By "we" I mean me and the other people hired into my work program. We are all transplants to Cinci out of various business schools.

I can't say that there is anything I really dislike about the area other than the fact that I am away from my family and I need to make more friends. The overall feel is very Midwestern (that's the only way I can describe it). And actually, we just started a SW Ohio support group for WLS. Nothing crazy, we just meet once a month for a meal and chat about life post-op (its nice to talk to people who know what you're going through and to see the people who are much further out and are still successful).

For my living area suggestions, I would have to know a little bit more about what you guys like. Every area here is so different. Being younger though, you really can't go wrong with Hyde Park. I also like Mt. Adams and Eden Park.

PM me if you're in the area and would like to meet up. I am not an internet psycho (haha). I can provide references. :-)

Best,
Jessica

Hey I resemble that remark. We do not. We drive offensively. Get them before they they get you.

I lived in Cincinnati for almost 10 years, so I can definitely help you here, as can Jess, just having moved there.

Carla pretty much hit in on the head with areas to live in, but as Jess said, it depends on what you usually like (architecturally, from a "vibe" standpoint, whether you have kids, etc).  Let me know more and I can probably direct you better.

It's a great area.  Very "average" and midwestern.  A little conservative.  Some areas are full of lots of transient folks or transplants (i.e. West Chester), which can be good or bad, depending on what your goals are.

Shopping is great.  Entertainment is decent, but not stellar.  However, you've got many major cities within a 2 hour drive.

You'll have to join us for our Cincinnati/Dayton Support Group meetings!  Let us know if there's anything else we can do to help!
