I have been doing so good and thought I was almost done with everything I had to do. I went for my first appt. with the surgeon today and was told I need to do a 6 month supervised diet., and 5 years of my weight history I just wanted to cry but I am also confused I have Molina of ohio and was told by them when I called them that they dont require it. I am just lost and I have seen several ppl on here with the same insurance as me that didnt have too do it either. I am waiting on my doctors office to call me back.  If anyone has any input that might help I would love to hear it thanks. I think I will go to sleep at least when I am asleep I dont have to deal with anything.

Did you ask why it was required when the ins co said it wasn't? Maybe the surgeon wants to make sure you can commit to the lifestyle necessary to be a success. I wish my doc had required as it might have prepared me more for the needed changes. I do sympathize with you but you can deal with this.

No what I meant was the doctors office gave me the paper that said that is what molina wanted to cover it , but I called the insurance company because I have seen so many ppl with my insurance who didnt have to do it. My insurance said no that they dont require it for approval so I dont know why she said they did.

i would ask for a copy of the reply letter they got...then i would call molina.  It could be a number of things...the doc might have gotten your file mixed up and the letter might be someone elses letter (that happens more often than you think)...it may be your letter and the person you spoke with from molina didnt know what they were talking about....
One thing i have learned make sure when you talk to the ins company you get a name and Id or extention number if at all possible.
dont get to down....keep your eye on the prize!  everything will fall into place for you...
i'll keep you in my prayers.

A lot of docs and insurance companies require a 5 year weigh history. They want to see how long you have been fat how much you have been fat (BMI over the years) and what you have tried to do about it. They want to see the yo yo effect that you can lose but can't keep it off. ALSO a lot of the docs want to see how you will stick to the program AFTER WLS so that is also why they want 6 mos of diet before surgery.   Like another poster said call your insurance again and write down the name of the person you tallked to then call your doc and ask them again. It could be a miss communication or you might just have to jump through the hops to get the WLS and doc you want.
If you look on my profile and go to 9/19/03
you'll find the letter I worte for my 5 year weight loss history.  It didn't copy and paste to well but your get the picture.
Good Luck,
Robin

Consider yourself fortunate... at least you GOT an appt. with your surgeon. My dr. has done all his necessary paperwork, insurance has pre-approved everything, I've been to the seminar, filled out all my paperwork...and I can't even get a CALL BACK from the hospital (for an appt. with the surgeon) my dr. wants me to use. I've called over and over and all they do is pass you off to someone else.......and no one is ever there to answer their phone......so you leave voice mail. And you NEVER hear back. I'm disgusted at this point. This hospital is supposed to provide more personaiized experience instead of being just another number at a larger hospital in the same area. But my feeling is........at least the hospital where I'd be a number I might get a CALL BACK from.......this is ridiculous.

What hospital are u going through? Yeah I think I would be very irate if I where you. I called the insurance company again and they again said no they have never heard of it (the 6th month diet) So again I called the hospital and she said that she has a checklist from molina that shows they are suppossed to. The guy I talked to from molina said he has dealt with many wls cases and he said none of them have had to do a 6 month diet but they did have to see the nutritionalist which I have already went to my first appt. She did say I can submit without it.

See? My point exactly...more jumping through hoops. I appreciate that these hospitals and doctors "want to make sure we're aware of everything"...but honestly, do they think we'd consider something this drastic if we hadn't already tried a route that wasn't as risky? I would guess MOST wls patients have already tried every conventional method of weight loss.......that's pretty much a given. I don't know too many obese people chomping at the bit to get cut open. In my opinion it's more of a legal ~cover their butt~ thing so no one can sue them......than it is concern for the patient. Bah humbug. Six month diet.......and how much are they making on our insurance companies for killing another six months???? Honestly people.

And the hospital my dr. wanted me to use so badly is St. Vincent's in Cleveland. But they just don't return calls. I understand ~busy~ but I have a busy life too. I think I'll make some calls today to the Cleveland Clinic. I may be a number there........but if I'm a recognized number.........that's working in my world.

I wish you the best my friend. Shop around.  :)

Try MetroHeath Medical Center.  Thats where I had my surgery a year ago.  I was never made to feel like a number there.  I wish you lots of luck with you search.
