Hi!  I had RNY about a month ago and am in need of a PCP (I know it's bad that I don't have one).  Because of weight issues, I have an emotional fear of doctors (have had some bad experiences)  I really want to go to someone who will be encouraging and supportive of this surgery, but don't know how to find that out.  Anyone know of a good, supportive PCP in the Columbus area?  I live in Reynoldsburg but am willing to drive a while for a good doctor.

Tina,  I don't know if she's good with everyone, but my PCP is Dr Cole-Sedivy (Monarch Health on Henderson Rd).  I usually end up seeing a nurse practitioner when i go there, and she's awesome.   When i first approached her about the fact that i wanted to get WLS, they were supportive and said they thought it would be a good idea.   So, i can only go based on my own experience, but it has been good thus far!

I see Kendra McCamey OSU Upper Arlington. I personally really like her. But she is a straight shooter... so I have no idea what degree of support you are looking for.  I would call your insurance and have them give you a list. If you know a nurse who works in a hospital, They usually are the ones who know... everything.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I guess by "supportive" I mean someone who might actually refer a patient for WLS, not someone who thinks it is an awful thing to do and that all people should be able to lose weight through diet and excercise alone.  If I could have done that, I wouldn't ve had this surgery :-) When I was in grad school, I had to go to a doctor at a university hospital (because of school insurance).  I talked with her about my weight issues and even asked about medication.  She told me that I just need to "get used to being hungry" and try weigh****chers.  Needless to say, that advice didn't really help and made me feel like a complete failure. I don't mind someone who is honest with me...we all need a kick in the pants sometimes.  I just want someone who is not going to treat me like I am a weak and horrible person for having this surgery.  I know there are doctors who think that, and there are those who don't. I want one who doesn't...and someone who understands at least the basics of this surgery.

Hello Tina...  I see that you had Dr. Philip Schauer for your RNY surgeon.  Did you go to the Cleveland Clinic for your surgery?  Hopefully, he will be my surgeon, also at the CC.  I researched him, and he is known to be a "top-notch" bariatric surgeon.  How did you like him as your bariatric surgeon? While searching for a bariatric hospital and surgeon to do my lap band, I checked out the Riverside Hospital in Columbus and Dr. Steven Myers.  He, also, had very high praise for his bariatric work and his caring bedside manners.  I don't know if he is a regular PC*****t, but you could check him out. Hi there!  Yep, I had Dr. Schauer.  He was great.  My surgery and recovery could not have been more text book.  I think he did a fabulous job.  I didn't really see him that often, you mostly see the "fellows", who are doctors that are learning from Dr. Schauer, I guess.  They are great, too.  When you do see Dr. Schauer, he is always very kind and friendly.  He is notorious for running late, but that is probably because he gives each person the time they need.  My surgery got pushed back later because of a complication in an earlier surgery.  So it was later in the evening by the time my surgery was over.  Dr. Schauer still took the time to come out and talk to my family and explain everything--even though the waiting room attendent said that most surgeons just call on the phone at that late an hour instead of coming to talk to you.  My mom was very impressed by that! Dr. Schauer just goes above and beyond.  Plus, he has done thousands of these...and I think he is actually writing a text book about the procedure or something for medical students.  Again, nothing but the highest praise for him.  I trusted him completely with, well, my life.  My mom lives in the cleveland area and is the one who took care of me afterwards, so she had asked me to consider the cleveland clinic.  I went to the begininning seminar, met the staff, and heard dr. schauer talk and I was convinced it was the place for me.  Good luck on your journey.  It has only been a month, but I would already do it again! Thanks for the recommendation!!

Hi Tina, I see Dr. Andrew Smith with Provider Physicians in Reynoldsburg,  They are right off of Main St.  He was Very supportive of my weight loss and the staff is great!  One of my best friends had RNY several years ago and sees another Dr in this practice as well - she says he is also very supportive.   Hope this helps!
