There is a difference here and I believe it's in where we are assuming this mentor role is. I hardly believe that the people accusing her of making up her suffering would be considered her "mentors".
I have always found her to be very open to trying new things and learning from other people. This post is not about constructive criticism but rather those who can't post without getting completely inappropriate and unwarranted digs in based on their personal "truth".

Are we even talking about the same post? Most of the comments on the ER thread (if memory serves) were those that said, more or less, that the OP should try drinking more water through several suggested methods or consider getting IV treatment from a non-emergency medical provider. And the angry replies amounted to, "you don't know my story, it's complicated," with no further elaboration nor appreciation for attempts to help with a problem that can be very serious.

She was accused of making up her issues. Please explain how you would feel if after suffering complications and venting on your support board, you were met with that attitude?
I like the way people think that just because they have time on the board it gives them a pass to act like an asshole. And by like I mean it's garbage. If you can't get your **** together enough to actually behave like a human being anymore because you've become so desensitized to this process and exactly what it's like in the beginning then it's time for you to find a NEW HOBBY for the love of everything good in the world. Seriously. Move on with your life. You're not needed here anymore.

There's a wealth of literature examining "peer support" programs for patients with chronic illness such as renal failure, heart issues, etc. I'm at work and can't pull up a full list of citations at the moment, but IIRC the most successful relationships (i.e. those with the highest satisfaction ratings in reported outcomes for the mentee at subsequent medical follow-up visits) are those in which the mentor is most open in regards to their experiences, and the patient is most willing to change his/her habits and attitudes based on the mentor's advice.

And sometimes people just want to vent and state that and are inundated with unwanted advice ;)
OK Kevin....I get the point you are trying to make....but you have totally missed what I have tried to indicate to the OP......
I am not one who is looking for "scientific" studies....because I also believe there is a study pro and con to just about everything...
But this is my truth.....those who do not accept anything contrary to their opinions/concerns....are usually the ones who are back on here in a few years complaining that they did not make goal.....or have gained most of their weight back....its very sad to see......
Not everyone writes as well as they could.....doesn't mean their advice isn't sound......I have no bone to pick with this particular OP.........however I do hate this type of post....telling people what they can or cant say on a forum

I agree completely. My issue is not with differing opinions it is with the way they are stated.
