Thnking about getting another dog

I didn't realize you worked for a shelter.  That's awesome.  I don't think I could handle that--I'd see abused dogs come in and start plotting ways to make their previous owners pay.

Yes, I would absolutely get an adult dog.  While our younger dog wouldn't mind a more active playmate, a puppy would be too much for our older dog to handle.  We got both our dogs as rescues.  Jackson, the younger, was about a year and a half, and Perkins, the older, was 5.  We have had them for 10 and 9 years, respectively, so I definitely don't feel like I was cheated out of time with my dogs by getting adults.

You make a good point about getting a dog 5 or older.  One of the other posters mentioned it as well.  I usually think of adult dogs as being over 2, but now that I think back, the dogs I've had in the past were all pretty active well past that point.

aarrrggggghhhhhh.!!!   I swapped pages to collect a url for you - and the browser page RELOADED.. Sigh.

Anyway, my mom's vet had a single Aspirin prescribed for her old arthritic gal.  It hurt just to watch her struggling to stand up.   Each morning, wrapped snugly in slices American cheese - and, even the next morning, she was moving like years before.

And here's a YouTube page with a superbly successful nutritional supplement treatment for a dog in so much pain all the time that a vet was ready to put him out of his misery.  I was excited because I plan to do this myself.  :-)

I loved how sweet your fellow looks in his warming lounging wear.   Makes me think of me.  :-D

You guys are purely awesome in treating his diabetes.  As if it was your very own child.   Im so glad he's still has his get-around vision.   With vision, he may very well tolerate a new dog if he's more than a "strange dog smell"..

Thanks for the photos.  Bookmark this thread and take your camera along, you can document your adoption search.  I'll enjoy the vicarious experience - and I'll probably learn more along the way.

Oh yes - do speak to your vet about adding, ob a few day's trial of Aspirin.  Who knows, just one might be safe enough.

Keep us in mind!

Great video.  Our dog is already on several of the supplements mentioned, and they do help.  Surprisingly, the supplement with the most noticeable difference is nu cat.  We ran out of dog glucosamine, but I had some nu cat joint supplement that the vet gave me for the cat, but the cat couldn't tolerate.  I figured the dog isn't much bigger than a cat, I'll just give him some nu cat until I make it to the pet store.  There was a noticeable difference in only three days.  So I read the ingredient list, and nu cat is not glucosamine, it's a multivitamin and mineral supplement.  Then I called the vet to make sure it wouldn't hurt him (should have done that first, but didn't think of it), and the vet said it's fine.  He's been on it ever since.  The one time I ran out, within a couple days he was slowing down and in more pain.  We got more in, and in three days his pain was drastically reduced again.

Well, I had this feeling I'd learn alot -  nu cat

I was astonished at how quickly it helped your fellow.  I saw there were a few other ingredients, so I'll want to research them.   I'm always learning - it keeps the mind forever young.

I'm going to see how quickly I can get my surgeries scheduled.   The sooner I get them done, the faster I can adopt a forever friend and companion.

I've spent years learning how to treat myself with supplements, but now I'm going to be learning how to keep my pet the healthiest possible.
