I don't hate guns at all but I also don't hate sex - I know there is a sex board, but it's just about dead - so it's a good way to kill a lively thread!!   Perhaps Member Services could open a new guns forum or suggest a private group where people can compare the size and calibre of their weapons.  I'd be up for joining!

I'm sure there are people who find both topics offensive, but I think if one is moved to an ADULT forum then they both need to be, (I believe this forum is not tagged as adult!).

My friend's father is in his late 80's.  He was leaving the grocery store one morning when two young men approached him threateningly and asked if he was alone.  He pulled open his jacket, and said he had a friend with him as he pointed to his revolver.  The two probably would-be assaultants ran away.

We have concealed carry licenses in the US because it helps us to feel safer.  When everyone finally wakes up and gets their CCL, maybe criminals will be less likely to pick on someone.  Without a gun in the US we can feel like the deer during hunting season.

I do not enjoy shooting my gun.  I do enjoy knowing that it empowers me.  I know that I have been trained to carry and use it properly.  I hope I never need to use my fire insurance.  I hope I never need to use my gun, but I need both.

Wow, that must be really scary. How awful to feel you need guns. Why would anyone want to carry a concealed gun? If it is to frighten people off, isn't that defeating the object?

do you have to be trained before you can carry a gun? Psychologically evaluated? I have read scare stories of people just being able to go and buy a gun. I assume that can't be true??

When I traveled to Australia in 1985, one of the first questions asked of me when they discovered I was American was "Do you own a gun?"  It was shocking to me how the rest of the world perceives us.

A lot of it was attributable to American television programs in which people were often depicted with guns.

I have no issues with handguns.   Hell, I live with a gun nut. I enjoy going to the firing range or desert and unloading rounds into targets.  But I have issues with the accessibility of assault rifles.

I hate people who hunt for sport.  There are tv programs that glorify the shooting/killing of game animals. My gun nut loves watching these shows. I understand there's a difference between killing for sustenance and killing for trophies,  but I become physically ill watching any animal get killed.  We had to compromise: he can'****ch "The Killing Channel" if I'm in the room and I can'****ch "The Real Housewives of ..." while he's in the room.

California is very restrictive on who can legally carry a handgun.  Other states are far more lenient.  Requirements vary from state to state. Although I hear the argument often about if everyone was allowed to carry a weapon that it would reduce acts of aggression, I have a hard time believing it. Recently a father was shot and killed in a movie theater by a retired police officer who took offense that he would not turn off his phone. Would the result be the same if no weapon was conveniently available?

I respect that others have different opinions based on their experiences.  I guess I'm just tired of watching school shootings and there's no easy solution that reasonable people can agree on.

Rant over. Please drive thru.

If you want to frighten someone, you wear you gun on a holster in plain sight.  What is scarier is when the criminal just does not know who might be concealing a weapon.

To buy a gun in the USA, all you need is a credit card.  I have seen people at the gun shop who look truly scary.

Card carriers like me have received classes, training and testing at the gun range.  We pass a written exam and must have a passing score to continue applying. Then we submit an application form that details our history and background information.  We submit photos similar to passport photos.  The application is processed by the local law enforcement.

I have a permit, a license for concealed carry and a loaded gun that I am comfortable using.  I can only conceal me gun in the state where my license is issued.

A few years ago I was on vacation when a man reached into my open car window and started punching my friend who was seated next to me in her face .  They knew each other and he was in a jealous rage.  When I went to push my On-Star button to call police, he said that he would beat me too if I called the police.

I was furious and helpless.  As I was cleaning the blood off of my car seats, windows, and rugs, I vowed that I would never allow myself to be that vulnerable again.  I am a widow, live alone in a rural area, and I am not physically able to fight someone who weighs double what I do.

I do not go looking for trouble, but if someone again invades my home or my vehicle and is hurting or threatening to hurt me or another person, then I want to fight back.  My gun is like my house insurance.  I pray that I will never have a fire and use the house insurance that I have been paying for 45 years, but if there is a fire then I am glad I have the insurance.

White Dove, I can see why you feel as you do. In Britain, a dislike of any other than shot guns for farmers or rifles for competitions is very deeply embedded in our psyche. Even our police are not routlinely armed. So maybe th fact that very, very few shootings of police happen shows that even our criminals are not regular gun carriers. It may change, but I hope not!

Guns such as rifles can only be held by people vetted, thoroughly checked on an annual basis by the police ho inspect the house to make sur guns at kept in a locked cabinet at all times. They have to have a very strong reason, fear would not count. Would have to be something like a farmer needing it for crows. People wanting to use handguns have to keep thm at a licenced shooting range, not at home.

We do get shootings, of course, but they really are unusual and even a single wounding makes national headlines. We also do get gne occasional madman, probably genuinely described as insane, who carries out mass shootings. I can remember three in my lifetime. But nothing will stop people like that. After the worst incident, at Dunblane, somewhere round 20 + years ago, gun ownership of handguns became totally illegal. I think almost everyone in the UK supports this. Ther a illegal ones out there, but possession of a firearm carries an automatic prison sentence.

There is no wish at all in Britqin to,change things.

I don't speak to the person who assaulted my friend.

They are still together and she brings him to parties.  I was at a party one day and he was expected.

One lady pulled me aside and told me that if I was "packing" and wanted to just get rid of him, everyone there would go to court and swear that he started it and I shot in self-defense.

Now that I something  I csn't understand. If a man raised his hand to me in anger, that would be the end of the relationship.

I've lived here for 11 years since 2001 (lived in Singapore for a few in between) and have NEVER felt I needed to carry a gun.  I really don't live somewhere you see or hear guns.

My son has fallen into the "need to carry" mindset and at present has (I think 4 guns) and has his concealed carry permit - I suppose I could run to his house during the zombie apocolypse?

Stranger shootings in my county are EXTREMELY rare - you are way more likely to be shot by a family member or targetted for a reason (like the Head of Corrections) - I might have had a gun if I were in that sort of a position and who knows, maybe he did?   Doubt I'd think to take my loaded weapon to open the door to a pizza guy   just as he didn't!
