On the evening before his funeral, his folks, his Sister and I went out to dinner. We were sitting talking about him...reminiscing about a lifetime of joy in knowing him. His Mother looked at me in the lull of conversation. She told me, "Thank God you had your surgery!
I don't want to bury another one of my kids. You were on the same path he was and it would have taken it's toll. You look beautiful and are more healthy than you've been since you were a kid and I'm proud of you Honey!"
Of course I cried, and the pride I felt in being an honorary member of their family was multiplied a million times over. A few days later, I asked if I could share his story and let people know how this journey was more profound due to losing him too, too soon. She told me to share his story with anyone who would listen so another Mother won't lose their child too soon. And so I am.
