We meet every Thursday at the Albany Medical Center South Campus (25 Hackett Blvd., Albany) 5:30pm to 7:30 pm.

This week we are going to have a guest speaker coming. A local chef that is doing some work in nutrition is coming to speak on protein shakes and meal planning. should be fun and informative.

If you have any questions or need directions PM me.

Topic: Last Chance NY OH Conference Fashion Show
Ladies & Gentlemen,

Last chance to join in the OH Fashion Show at the NY Conference October 22nd!

Anyone interested in participating in the fashion show for the Long Island, NY OH conference on October 22, 2011 please contact me to provide information and photos at [email protected].

The OH Fashion Shows are open to anyone who wants to participate. After having surgery and working so hard to stay on track, you deserve to show off a bit!  We ask that you send high resolution "before" photos and a brief blurb stating your surgeon's name, surgery type, starting weight and current weight (your choice). OH will put them all together to be shown on a large screen while you strut your stuff on the catwalk to music! This starts at 8pm on Saturday evening and we ask that you provide the outfit that you would like to be photographed in! To keep with our schedule, you may be asked to join the other models by 7:45pm that evening to coordinate the lineup.

Upon submitting your photo, you are giving ObesityHelp your permission to use your likeness on our website or in our magazine.

Any other questions? Just ask!!!

Topic: Hi from Long Island
Just wanted to say to my fellow NYers. I had my lapband done in 2007 by Dr. Geiss in Syosset and  now I am planning an RNY with Dr. Buchin in Huntington. Does anyone have any experience with him. He seems very nice and his staff is also very nice.  I have a date set for October 17th but I am almost certain I will get denied.  I am having trouble getting my NUT letter but hopefully by monday I will have it.  So here goes with a little background info: I have united Healthcare/medicaid. I know they cover the surgery but they also have the 6mos requirement. The surgeon seems to think that because I saw the NUT every month as well as seeing him for my medically supervised diet I will get approved.  I have an eary feeling that is not true. But we will see. I have an ulcer at the junction of my esophagus and stomach, my band has slipped up to my esophagus so I don't really have restriction but I do throw up a lot. Probably at least 3-4 times a week. Any advise or support would be appreciated even if it's sharing your own experiences.

Thanks!!!

Topic: Mental Illness Awareness Week, October 2-8
This crossed my screen and I wanted to pass it on

Written by Betsy Jay, Chaplin Bassett Medical Center. Just a reminder to all of us who struggle with food issues.

Next week is Mental Illness Awareness Week. Established in 1990 by Congress, the goal of the week is to end the stigma associated with mental illness and to seek better understanding as well as access to diagnosis and treatment. As the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) states, "Mental illnesses are serious medical illnesses. They cannot be overcome through "will power" and are not related to a person's "character" or intelligence. Mental illness falls along a continuum of severity. Even though mental illness is widespread in the population, the main burden of illness is concentrated in a much smaller proportion-about 6 percent, or 1 in 17 Americans-who live with a serious mental illness." The statistics for mental illness in the United States are sobering:

One in ten children has a serious mental illness

Less than one-third of adults and one-half of children who have mental health needs receive treatment in any one year

One of every five community hospital stays involves either a primary or secondary diagnosis of mental illness

Every 15.8 minutes, a life is lost to suicide. The suicide rate for older adults is fifty percent higher than the national average (statistics fromwww.MentalHealthMinistries.net

The National Institute of Mental Health reports that one in four adults or approximately 57.7 million Americans-experience a mental health disorder in a given year.

The U.S. Surgeon General reports that 10 percent of children and adolescents in the United States suffer from serious emotional and mental disorders that cause significant functional impairment in their day-to-day lives at home, in school and with peers.

The World Health Organization has reported that four of the 10 leading causes of disability in the US and other developed countries are mental disorders. By 2020, Major Depressive illness will be the leading cause of disability in the world for women and children. (statistics from www.nami.org)

Tuesday is the National Day of Prayer for Mental illness Awareness, Recovery and Understanding. On that day, consider lighting a candle of healing "that troubled minds and hearts, broken lives and relationships might be healed." Light a candle of understanding "that the darkness of stigma, labels, exclusion and marginalization might be dispelled." Light a candle of hope "for better treatment, for steadier recovery, for greater opportunity to work and serve." (Carole J. Wills).

Hi all, hope all is well with everyone.  Because of the major disruption in the Town of Vestal, Town of Owego etc due to flooding our meeting space in the Vestal Library is not going to be available until January of 2012.  (FEMA has taken over the meeting rooms).     I have been trying to find a public meeting space that is accessible to all. I have not yet found a public space for October. (A lovely and generous person offered their home, but I don't want to impose and some people don't feel comfortable going to someone's house if they have never met them) At this time, I am going to go ahead and cancel October's meetings because Chaos is overwhelming me and I need the time to try to get a handle on other aspects of my life.  I am really sorry to not be able to offer meetings in October.
I have found space in the George F. Johnson Library in Endicott (1001 Park Street, Endicott NY 13760) Here is a link to a google map so that you can find your way  http://g.co/maps/xxte9 The only time they had available in November and December is the second Thursday of the month (Instead of November 9, the meeting will be on November 10; December 16 instead of December 15)  Hopefully by January we will have our space back in Vestal as I have a lovely guest coming from Curves to talk about circuit training and the difference between weight training and cardio.

I am hoping that Dr. Julie Dostal will be available on November 10th to present a talk about "Living Life after Weight Loss Surgery: Successfully Navigating Holidays, Parties, Families and other Winter Stressors".  I have arranged with the library to use their presentation equipment so power point, video etc will be available if needed.   Hope everyone has a great October and enjoys the OH Event on Long Island.   Teri Stoel
