Hi,
I just had VSG done with Dr. Dunnican (He was actually trained by Dr. Singh and in same office) on 6/14. I have BCBS of FL. They denied me with a week to go before surgery. Dr. Dunnican told me to continue with my pre surgical testing and I met with him on 6/9. He made one phone call on my behalf and got the ruling changed. I couldn't believe I got to keep my date! I must say I don't really know Dr. Singh. I know he had done more sleeves than Dr. Dunnican, but I have heard his personality is, well, lets just say I don't think we would have gotten along as well. Dr. Dunnican, in my opinion is the way to go. Read my review of him on my home page. All I can say is he is awesome!
Most ins co. will deny this surgery based on they find it "investigational". Not that you wouldn't benefit from having WLS. They said I could have RNY or the Band, but when you go through all that we have been through, you firmly believe you picked the surgery that was right for you. With insurances not all policies are same so if for instance my CDPHP paid for something yours might not as emplyers get different policies. I recommend folks call the ins co to get a copy of THEIR policy that stipulates around bariatric surgery, many do not cover at all, some only a certain type, others only after a certain amount of preop wt loss or for certain qualifying criteria (BMI, diet hx, medical comorbiodities) as others commented go to group!!!!

Your best bet to find out what the requirements and how the approval process works is to contact Medicaid and Affinity. You really need to know what they cover as well. It is possible they do not cover this surgery. And if they do, there may be minimum requirements for BMI, etc. Good Luck!
