Liquid Diets before surgery?

I was wondering why some Dr.s require a liquid diet 2 weeks or more before surgery? I think mine said 2 days,what would the benefits be?? Any replies would be greatly appreciated--thanx Robin

Hi Robin, I am pre-op however, I took the training to become a Chapter Leader and Monica Ganz said that one of the reasons is the liquid diet causes your liver to shrink which gives the doctors more room to work and lowers the percantage of injury to the other organs. Hugs, Dawn

My doctor reuests 2 Slim Fast Low Carb shakes and one low carb meal 2 weeks before surgery and the reason is to shrink the liver. I did this plus lost 75 pounds before my surgery and he told me after it made his job much easier.

I had a 6 week liquid diet prescribed through my docs office. I drank 5 Medifast protien shakes a day. I could only have water, tea, cofee, or diet soda besides. No broth, soups etc. I was told it also shrinks the liver but also helps the surgery go smooth. I lost 40 pds. before my surgery but my doc only requires 10% of your weight. Good Luck!! GUYS...... i just went to my surgeon yesterday. He requires a 10 percent weigh loss prior to surgery. I have lost 12 pounds now he wants the balance gone of 13 or he will cancel surgery date we booked. HIS big issue with me is my liver...its enlarged and he needs it out of the way. However, he doesnt prescribe the liquid diet and maybe this is how i should go? ANY suggestions I dont want my date to be cancelled. I was gonna due atkins but that has worked for me since my last go at it...thats why i am turning to WLS...... My surgeon has me so worried. He also only booked me for my date of surgery...with his best assistant as if he expects troubles. SO this added stress is killing me too..... but if the liquid diet shrinks the liver maybe i should do that for 2 weeks and then see him and let him see it down.....how many pounds did u guys loose doing the liquids???ALL HELP wanted !!!
