Empire BC/BS - do they cover nutritionist eval?

I'm due for my Nutritionist consult on 6/22 and wondered if the fees would be covered by Empire BC/BS (I know most insurance companies dont).  Was hoping to hear from someone who is insured by them.

While I'm at it, please let me know if they'll cover the costs for the psych eval too.  Trying to be prepared for my visits.

Thank you!

I have Empire and they have covered everything related to my surgery including every visit to the nurtitionist and psych. All I paid was my co-pay. It depends largely on your individual plan. Your best bet is to call and find out what YOUR version of Empire covers. While you're on the phone with them, double check that you are covered for your surgery and what their requirements are. Some Empire palns have exclusions against bariatric surgery. You don't want to wait til you have a date to find out that you haven't done everything thast your policy wants.

May I ask what part of NY you are in?

 Hey Debbie!

Thanks for the info.  I've already called Empire, found out there are no exclusions or waiting periods involved with the surgery under the plan.  I will have to call tomorrow to find out if my nutrition, psych, and apnea evals are covered.

I'm in Westchester, Mount Vernon to be exact.  What about you?

I live about an hour north of Albany, little bitty place called Cossayuna. The kinda place if you sneeze as you go through you miss it. I had my surgery in Albany.

Most of the Empire plans are similar in coverage. There may be limits on how many times you can see the psych or nutritionist. So far I haven't hit any walls in that respect.

Hello KayyyBeee, I also have the empire plan and had surgery on 09/21/10 and so far the only thing that has not been covered for me has been the Nutritionist , everything else I only have had to pay the copay.

Good luck on your journey.

Hey John!  Thanks for responding.

I was told I would have to cough up the money for the Nut as well.  Guess we're not as lucky as Debbie...

Guess I am going to stop complaining about my crappy insurance. I have not had them turn down anything except the one time my PCP billed for providing mental health services. And even that I was able to get fixed.

Make the most of those appointments as you can. Ask a gazillion questions, learn all you can about your vitamins and labs. You may be able to drop going to the nutritionist if you feel comfortable with your primary doing your post surgical follow ups.

My insurance is also Empire-the government plan and they paid for everything except the NUT eval. I also want you to be aware that even though they pay for the different compnents for the surgery, they dont always pay for the surgery, stupid I know. When I had mine done, I didn't get an answer until the very last minute, I didn't know whether I was coming or going. Make sure your surgeon files the papers well in advice with the surgery date. The insurance company kept asking for more information and the woman at my surgeons office was completely on top of it, but, I kept calling too. It was extrememly stressful.

Good luck!
