Dr. O'Malley in Rochester
Hi!
I'm new to the forum. I live in West Seneca. I called Dr. O'Malley today and am signed up for his seminar on 4/29. I'm not 100% sure I want to have WLS but I'd say I'm 90% sure. The more I read here and on the net, the more convinced I am.
Has anyone here had Dr. O'Malley? What can I expect at the seminar? How soon was your surgery after the seminar? I'm wondering how long I'm going to have to wait for my surgery.
I wish I could attend an earlier seminar but they said the surgeon that gives the seminar will be your surgeon and I want Dr. O'Malley because I know 2 people who had him, so I'm waiting until 4/29. But I feel like I've just about decided to do this (OK, I'm 96% sure) so I want to get started NOW, not in 2 months.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
xoxo,
Katie

Hi,
I live in Rochester and am having gastric bypass next week with Dr. Johnson at Highland. Dr. O'Malley is the head of the bariatric surgery program at Highland and he is amazing. I have had several friends that had him for surgery. Highland has an wonderful bariatric program. They are very thorough, caring and have an excellant reputation. People come from very far away to have Dr. O'Malley do their surgery. Let me know if you have any other questions I can answer.

Hi Katie,
Dr. O'malley is suppose to be ranked in the top 5% of baratric surgeons in the US ..... I am looking into revision surgery from a VBG (Stomach Stapling) that I had in the 80's to a VSG (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy) .... I have my seminar on March 25 with Dr O'Malley, I will let you know how it goes.

Hi Katie,
I used to live in the Tonawandas before moving to the Rochester area 3 yrs ago.
I have Dr O'Malley and went to his seminar in late August. It was very informative and I was able to get a few questions I had answered. They give you a folder and parperwork, the nutritionist and bariatric coordinator speak for a while, then the surgeon speaks and answers ?s. He is very knowledgable and was able to explain everything in a more "civilian" way instead of big medical terms.
My insurance requires 6 months of nutrition appts before they will approve the surgery so I am finishing that up this month and should be scheduled for surgery next month or so.
But, normally their program is only 3 months of followed nutriotion appts where you get weighed and go over your food journal, suggestions for better choices are given etc. Then when that is over you are scheduled for an appt with Dr O'Malley to discuss what surgery you want, then they are currently 4-6 weeks for scheduling surgery after that. But that may change in the future.
Also, I was really upset to have to do 6 months of appts since this summer I was ready to do thisand wanted to get going. But, time goes fast and they are making sure you will be as successful as you can be afterwards. Best of luck!

Hi Katie! I live in West Seneca too and had my surgery with Dr. O'Malley. He is a very thorough surgeon. If you need your hand held, he's not the Dr. for you, but otherwise, he's excellent. I had my DS last November and have lost 72 lbs since surgery. The process does take a while (my seminar was at the end of April and I was scheduled for surgery in November), but it is well worth it. I'm glad it took a while because it gave me time to make sure that this was the surgery for me.
They will explain the various weight loss surgeries (gastric bypass and lapband) at the seminar and walk you through what will happen after the seminar. I have found the office staff to be very nice and haven't had any issues with them. Dr. O'Malley is an amazing surgeon! I would recommend him to anyone! I saw Dr. Johnson in the hospital and he too is amazing (he has a great bedside manner too).
PM me if you have any questions or would like to meet up.
