Psychotherapy and Weight Loss
First, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Jeffrey Klein, and I am a Licensed Psychotherapist located in midtown Manhattan. Further, I have a practice that treats people of different physical and weight challenges, to which weight control (loss, maintenance or gain) is a major focus.
Most of all, I would like offer my support to those that are in the process of contemplating the life changing experience that comes with weight loss. I have family, friends and clients that have gone through everything from multiple surgeries, to dieting challenges. Their dedication to save their lives from obesity is inspiring to say the least. Psychotherapy is an amazing, evidenced based tool to help people continue to progress towards their ultimate goal, improved health.
Please post your questions, and I will be happy to answer them.
Best Regards,

What I love about that question is that the answer is both yes and no. To reference something you stated, "I have considered getting back into therapy, but so far don't feel out of control". Just like many medical procedures exist to assist people with weight loss, it is healthier to deal with the challenge before it gets out of control. As such, the amount of weight you gain; or lose for that matter, before or after surgery is an indicator of your emotional health.
Many of my client's discuss the pain and anger associated with the way society used to treat them before the weight loss. Others are scared to gain the weight back, and the disorder presents as anxiety. Hence, the "eating" is an old habit which attempts to quell their worries. Unfortunately, this causes the intentionally avoided weight gain to reappear.
Ultimately, you may want to consider going in for "maintenance" with your psychotherapist. This can be a bi-monthly meeting to discuss your progress (or lack of) regarding your goals. As an individual, you have done a lot to improve your physical health. Research has demonstrated that psychotherapy is effective for challenges related to weight gain or loss. The specific emotion is important, but the skill set to deal with it is also crucial.
