ShopRite of New Rochelle Readies for Grand Opening

Progressive Grocer

Jan 5, 2010

Wakefern Food Corp.’s wholly owned SRS (ShopRite Supermarkets) division is gearing up for the grand opening of its 27th location in New Rochelle, N.Y. The store will be the largest ShopRite in Westchester County.

Among the unique features of the 70,000-square-foot supermarket is an on-site registered dietitian, who will be available daily for customer consultation. The free service will offer customers the opportunity to discuss their health and dietary needs with a nutrition professional to create customized meal plans while concurrently educating customers on a number of issues, including learning how to shop for healthy meals, proper nutrition for specific medical conditions, or how to get more fruits and vegetables into one’s diet. The dietitian will also organize and host cooking classes to encourage healthier eating, and offer monthly screenings for specific health issues such as diabetes or high cholesterol.

Noted SRS president and COO Dave Figurelli, “This store is unique in that we can offer our customers value-added features such as an in-store dietitian, which brings a new level of service to our shoppers."

In addition to a broad array of groceries and fresh produce, the fresh food-focused store will offer ShopRite from Home delivery service along with an in-store pharmacy and a broad selection of ethnic foods and natural and organic products. A wide array of prepared foods, including a salad bar and a selection of Japanese, Korean and Chinese specialties for dining in or taking out, as well as a fresh-made sushi bar, will also be highlighted.

Another SRS-owned store is slated to open in the Westchester County town of Scarsdale this year.

ShopRite supermarkets are members of Wakefern Food Corp., a retailer-owned cooperative, based in Keasbey, N.J. At more than 200 stores located throughout New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland, ShopRite serves over 5 million customers each week.
