Reflection 1st Month Post Op
Hi OH Fam,
Well it's been a month and what an experience it has been. First off I want to say, I give all praise to my God, whom bought me through this surgery without any complications. Second, my surgeon, Dr. Alexander Barkan, who is a highly skilled surgeon and very personable. To the staff at Winthrop Surgical Group, "You rock". The staff at Winthrop University Medical, thank you for taking good care of me. Last but not least, My loving husband, my mom, "thanks for being by my side" and the rest of my family and friends.
The feelings I had up to the moment that I was wheeled into the operating room was so calm. I waited for this for so long and it's about to happen. When I woke up my husband was right there by my side. All I could remember was, I went in the OR at 2pm and after 5pm I started to wake up and hubby was taking pictures of me. It was a little ruff in the beginning for me to get up and walk but time after time it got better.
Once I got home, that's when it all started to come into play of how my new life was beginning. I was home for two weeks, resting, walking, taking my meds and watching alot of television. That was the best two weeks and learning basically how and what to drink and eat. My first week back to work was great, I was already down 20lbs and everyone who knew which was a select few already saw a difference. I must admit, I have great co-workers and bosses. I have to travel approximately 1.5 hours to work going and coming and it wasn't so bad. I was a bit fatigued at first but by the end of the week I was getting back into the groove of things.
I must admit, I'm not really into the scale like most people are because I made sure that I did not purchase one. The last time I was weighed was at the surgeons office and I will go back next week to see how much more I've lost. I definitely see it my clothes. I refuse to buy new clothing until around Thanksgiving because I still have clothes that I couldn't fit before surgery that I am now starting to fit into.
As far as my eating habits, I'm preparing all of my meals ahead so that I never have to wonder what I am going to have for lunch or dinner. My water intake is a challenge sometime, however, I know I must increase because I woke up with a severe headache this morning and I finished off that bottle of water quickly. As far as exercising, I must improve on that as well. Even though, I do have to walk a few blocks to work going and coming I cannot use that as part of my exercise regimen. However, I do try to increase my walking by taking the stairs as much as I can. Then again I still have to set aside time to dedicate towards exercising.
This month I went to a baby shower, my first social gathering that was catered and I didn't do so well. I knew I was going and I prepared myself by eating before I went and I did. Anyway, it was time to go up to the buffet and I picked up a big plate, knowing I'm not hungry. I put a few things on there that I thought I could eat, just to be sociable. Anyway, there was beef and broccoli and I cut the beef into a small piece and I mean small and I was chewing, chewing , chewing and swallowed and it got stuck. The pain was horrible. I pushed the plate away trying to keep a calm face but I was in agony. I thought to myself go to the ladies room and try to through up. Went and couldn't do it. There was kids running back and forth and I couldn't bring myself to do it. So, I had to grin and bare it until it finally moved an half hour later. So I enjoyed the rest of my time afterwords.
Well OH Fam, thank you for letting me share my thoughts. For all of the newbies out there if you are considering surgery don't worry about it. You will be fine and you will be glad you did. For all of you that crossed the other side thank you for sharing your experiences. It really helped me while I was preparing myself for this journey and I'm still learning.
Until next time.
Peace and Blessings.
