I keep hearing that brown rice is good for you and a lot healthier than white rice. I wanted to know it it was okay to eat some brown rice too or is that a no no food?

Rice may not be tolerated after WLS as it can swell in the pouch even after cooked, so man keep away from it. I personally have not done rice/pasta in 7 yrs, mainly due to the high carb content more than the uncomfortable fator..the most rice Ihave done is on a sushi roll about 4 pieces, if that counts and I do ok. Personal choices, total calories in, overall day to day food and emotional control, watching for possible slippery slopes (aka triggers) and making best decisions for us as individuals is what the successful lifestyle after WLS is about. Will brown rice be bad for you? Who knows one bite won't hurt most likely but weighing it all in the scheme is probably what is needed! Eat your protein first then veggies if room for a few spoons of brown rice most can go for it w/o detrimental longterm effects.......!

Few links below for more info on this! Brown is certainly a WHOLE grain and better choice thank white, no rice would probably be best choice!!

brown rice is a better source of several nutrients such as riboflavin, folate, iron and magnesium. It has three times the fiber of white rice.

Mock Fried Rice recipe! NO RICE

For pasta I use the yam noodles (shirataki) at times..or frenchcut greenbeans or zucchini ribbons sauteed with pasta sauce over them and a meatball! Same concept!

I think that many of the "no-no's" are personal choices.  For example, some surgeons state liquids only for 2 days after a fill.  Others say mushies.  Others say eat normally.  So, when it comes to certain food groups I think we need to judge how our band tightness is at the present time.

I was told "no way" could I eat rice by others.... yet, I occasionally go to japanese and have no issues with rice at all.  Especially if I moisten it with low salt soy sauce and eat small bites and pause between bites.

Another no-no I was cautioned about was bread.  Yet, I can eat it (well toasted of course) in small bites.

So in closing, I think we need to realize that while some foods we cannot ever eat due to band tightness, others may be just fine.  I have not tried to eat beef/steak since surgery --  other than an occasional ground beef pattie -- and I likely will not try, either.  Nor do I do a lot of veggies (have not had corn for example since surgery).

I have discovered that "pretzel crisps" go down very well, with tuna salad or hummus, but I cannot halt after just 1 serving, calorie wise (12 crisps) -- so I have learned to not keep a bag of this in the house.

No-no foods are up to what your band can tolerate, and if it will go down, you need to determine if it will be a trigger food for you.

I was banded April 20, 2009.

258.5/194.5/159

April 8, 2009  = 258.5

April 20, 2009 = 244 lb.s (lost 14 lbs./surgery date)

First Fill May 19, 2009 (3cc's)

June 8, 2009 = 226.5 lbs. (lost 32 lbs.)

October 5, 2009 = 201 lbs (lost 57.5 lbs.)

Nov. 27, 2009 = 198 lbs. (lost 60.5 lbs.)

May 23, 2010 = 194.5 (65 lbs. lost)
