Albany Med ???
Hi guys..
when you had your surgery at Albany Med.. when you wake up from surgery .. is there anything on you?? such as a mask over your face??
and when you woke up were you in recovery or already in your room?
did they allow family mbs to go back into the room with you pre-surgery?
and how long after sugery were your family mbrs allowed in the room?
how bad is the test they do to check for leakage???
sorry for all the ?? but my surgery is only 6 days away and Im freaking out a bit.. ok, a lot!! lol
do they weigh you in day of surgery?
thanks, Dee

We just talked about this in group last night! And I can answer from experience. I had my surgery there March 30. Keep in mind my experience is mine, you may have a totally different one.
when you had your surgery at Albany Med.. when you wake up from surgery .. is there anything on you?? such as a mask over your face?? I don't know - don't remember anything from the moment I got my pre-surgery meds to when I was wheeled off the elevator going to my room. Being a nurse I will tell you that there will be EKG leads on your chest, a blood pressure cuff on one arm, a little oxygen sensor on one finger, there will be oxygen running while you are in recovery. It may be cold, but you can ask for blankets. You can get pain meds, ask for them. And again you may not remember any of this.
and when you woke up were you in recovery or already in your room? You do wake up and talk to the staff in the recovery room but you may or may not remember this part, the drugs they gave you for the surgery are wonderful
did they allow family mbs to go back into the room with you pre-surgery? One, maybe two. Choose wisely, this is the person the doctor needs to talk to after you are out of the operating room.
and how long after sugery were your family mbrs allowed in the room? As soon as you are settled in, but remember you just had major surgery, you are not there to entertain, you are there to rest and recover, you might want to limit the number that are there day of surgery.
how bad is the test they do to check for leakage??? There are two test. The first is done in your room. You drink a samll amount of grape juice and they watch your drain to see if purple comes out. I hate grape juice but I drank it anyway. The other test is done a short time after that. The best I can tell you is it is uncomfortable. You swallow some stuff as you stand in front of an x-ray machine and turn for them. it's over pretty quick, about 10 minutes.
sorry for all the ?? but my surgery is only 6 days away and Im freaking out a bit.. ok, a lot!! lol
do they weigh you in day of surgery? No but they can tell if you pigged out and did the last supper the night before. Go easy the two or three days before the surgery. Remember all liquids the day before. The night before try to stay up right til midnight and get some extra water in, especially if your surgery is later in the day. It will help. They may be able to weigh you if you ask.
There are never too many questions. Ask lots. I check this board two or three times a day when I am home, sometimes more. I won't be around much this weekend, I've got to work.
Good luck, Deb

i ended up being the last surgery of the day and was in surgery longer than expected. i barely remember waking up in the pacu - the only thing i remember saying they sent my husband home because it was so late. i only remember getting to the room barely getting my morphine pca button and the nurse telling me to pu**** i also had my morphine pump d/c early due to i am sensitive to the effects of morphine and i was knocked out. i also remember dr. dunnican saying he wasnt going to make me walk then. they do not weigh you day of surgery. the pouch test isnt bad. the drink is nasty tasting though.
good luck.
