Ellis Hospital - how long to surgery?
Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum and just starting my weight loss surgery journey. I have an appointment for my first orientation session at Ellis Hospital on August 20 and I was wondering how long from that point to expect to have surgery.
Does anyone have an idea of what to expect? Also, do they have a 10% weight loss requirement at Ellis?
Thanks for any advice. A buddy would be greatly appreciated! This is a nerve-wracking decision!

I haven't seen any Ellis Hospital patients on this board yet. I had mine at Albany Med. I know someone who had surgery at Ellis the week before me, I'll ask her what their requirements are. I don't think she had to loose 10%.
Will post soon, Deb

Kathy,
I had my surgery at Ellis on January 12. 2009. I also had my informational orientation in August. After that they called in 2 weeks and appts. started! It was all so organized. Appts were all listed with everything I had to do. It was nice! Everytime I had a question I would just call KIM. My surgeon is Dr. Panamanglore. I loved him too!
I have not had any problems and am down 80lbs as of this morning.
I had to do 2 weeks of Medifast right before surgery(to shrink my liver).
So you could possibly be having surgery at the beginning 0f 2010!

Lots of people on here have had their surgery at Ellis - both hospitals have great programs!
I had Dr. Pandemanglore and was very happy with him - all the surgeons their are great! They will have you go through the testing - their are the tests that everyone has to do and some have to do others - such as for sleep apnea, diabetes, cardiologist etc. I had to see an endrocinologist. They require that you are on Medifast - the length of time varies - I was on it for 6 weeks, some people are 14 , some are less. This is to skrink the liver and organs and of course you will lose weight. The amount they want you to lose also varies as everyone is different.
As I said the program is wonderful - I had my surgery February 13, 2008 and have no regrets whatsoever. You will do great - most importantly listen to what they say and follow their instructions and have a postive attitude.
Let me know if you have any questions. I will be glad to help you.

There you go Kathy - you got answers from Ellis patients. they gave you better information about their program than I got from the girl at work.
I am doing great since my surgery. 50+ pounds since the surgery, 75 total since joining the program. Thanks for asking. If there is anything I can do for you ask. I'm just a post away.

HI Kathy,
I had my surgery at Ellis as well. I went to my informational meeting in Aug. But had my first appointment in Nov. I had to wait because I requested a particular doctor(Dr. Clarke) and I needed a particular day of the week. My surgery was March 9th. As a previous poster said, they had all my appointments set up for me and tried the best they could to have them scheduled on my day off that was in the middle of the week. My experience so far has been great. The care I got at the hospital was excellent as is the after care at the surgeon's office. I was required to lose 10% of my weight. My insurance required 5 and my surgeion required 5. I was on medifast for 6 weeks. I'velost 73 lbs. 25 before the surgery. The more you loose before the safer the surgery will be is how it was explained to me. So, good luck and God bless

I also had my surgery at Ellis with Dr. Clarke. I had my orientation around Thanksgiving 2007 and had my first office appointment Jan 08. My wife also signed up for the program at the time of the orientation, so we had to get her referral before our first visit. All the preop testing was set up during February/March 08 and I started the Medifast In March and was on for 4 weeks (Lost 45 Pounds, over 10%) I had my Surgery April 08 on a Thursday and was home before noon on Sat. My wife had her surgery with Dr. Clarke 3 weeks later.
I think the wait might be a little bit longer right now, since they are getting very busy.
Good Luck,
Jim

Hi Kathy...
another Ellis patient here...
I had been thinking about the surgery for sometime- discussed it with my primary and his Nurse Practioner- she was/is very supportive.
so when i saw an ad in the Gazette about an information session at Bellview - I phoned and registered for the event. That was January 21.
This session was not an orientation meeting but was very helpful- a number of post op pts were there - both band & RNY. Dr. Clarke gave a very clear explanation of risks & benefits. I knew this was something that i wanted to study further and decide which surgery was best for me.
That night however, I did take home the packet they give you to fill out with your history and all kinds of information they need to process your paperwork. then I had to wait...until the next orientation meeting-
That was April 16 at the Ellis auditorium. Dr. Panemangelore gave that presentation - also very good explanations. Very personable- set everyone at ease right off the bat. As some people have difficulty understanding accents right at the start he says...something like...
You may be wondering - but I'm NOT from around here!
Very similar presentation as the one in Jan. Very informative- more folks that are post ops. etc. Q & A session.
After the program I handed in my paperwork and was told I'd get a call from the office in about a week. In a week(give or take a day or so)... got my phone call.
1st appt at Dr. Clarkes is set for MAY 21st. That day I saw:
the Nurse;
Dr. Clarke's PA;
and the last person I saw was Alicia the wonderful scheduling person!
She clearly explained the program and then asked if this or that date for surgery is better for me? I just about fell off my chair!
So- May 21 1st appt- THAT DAY!!! given surgery date- July 23rd.
2 months from 1st appt. now only 18 days away!
They are wonderful there! I'm sure the docs at Albany Med are equally wonderful- Ellis is just closer to my home and Actually I had never heard about a bariatric program at Alb Med.
Yes had to loose 10% prior. I'm well on my way. Lost a good 11 lbs before I saw Dr. Clarke on the 10th of June. (to loose this I did a modified Atkins/So. Beach Diet)
Started MediFast June 27- doing well with it.
People are noticing my weight loss and clothes are already fitting better. Have dropped 1 pant size.
Be sure you get a BEFORE PHOTO and get someone to help with your measurements. I have a photo a couple weeks after i started and still don't have my measurements.
any ?'s be glad to be of help...
