Hello Im Nicky
Hi Nicky,
My name is Shannon and I am from Syracuse, I just had my surgery on 6/22/09. My advise is to consider bringing loose shorts or pajama bottoms to put on after you get to you room, because it is diffiicult to walk, drag an IV Pole, brace your belly, and hold your gown closed so your fanny doesn't hang out. Remember to keep on top of the pain management and to rest whenever possible because there always seems to be a nurse or other caregiver in your room. I hope that everthing goes very well for and good luck.

Nicky,
I had surgery on March 2 (4 months to the day before yours) at Highland Hospital, also with Dr. Johnson.
Like the other folks here have already said, pack light! I took books, all my pre-op stuff, even an iPod! I really didn't use too much of what I took. One thing I did take that I found very helpful was chapstick! Your lips get dry in the hospital.
They gave me basic toiletries there, like a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant (all of which I had packed before surgery), soap, and shampoo. One thing about the shampoo, though. It was a no-rinse shampoo, which left my hair feeling REALLY yucky! You might want to steer clear of it.
Highland was pretty good to me. Altough, if you have a CPAP machine, make SURE your contact person knows where it is, and ASKS about it! The day of my surgery, mine went missing for like 12 HOURS! Didn't show up until 9:30 or 10 that night in my room, because I was watching Monday Night Raw (yes, I know, but it is a guilty pleasure of mine!) when it showed up. No one could explain where it was.
I really wasn't in any pain or discomfort when I got home. They closed the incision sites up with staples, and I was able to shower right when I got home (and they only let you wash up there).
Good for you to have your recliner set up. You might want to have on hand some fat free soups (cream of chicken, or cream of mushroom), sugar-free jell-o and puddings, and a good selection of protein powders. A good selection of protein powder samples are necessary since most people (I was not one of them) experience taste changes after surgery.
Good luck Nicky, and, if you want to talk, drop me an email!

Nicky,
I do go to the Monarch meetings, yes. The facilitators (Angelo and Kim) are very nice people. I also do the Odyssey group meetings too. They are the first and third Tuesdays of the month, over at the Park Ridge Living Facility, and start at 7pm.
If you have ANY questions, PLEASE don't hesitate to ask!
